Marcus ran every Saturday morning, and for eleven years I loved that about him.
It was the most reliable thing in our marriage. The alarm would go off at six, and I'd hear the soft rustle of him pulling on his shorts in the dark so he wouldn't wake me, though he always did. The front door would click. An hour and ten minutes later, give or take, he'd come back glowing and breathless, smelling like cold air and effort, and he'd hand me a coffee from the place two blocks over. A flat white for me, an oat latte for him. It was our little ritual, the gentle bookend to the week.
