I met him at a rooftop birthday party for a friend I barely see anymore, in that golden hour when everyone looks better than they are.
He was the most put-together man in the room — well-dressed, easy smile, the kind of confident eyes that find yours across a crowd and don't look away. We circled each other for an hour, both too proud to make the first move, until he finally crossed the floor and opened with a joke so cheesy I laughed out of sheer disbelief. But he was quick, and warm, and within twenty minutes he had me feeling like the only person up there. Before the party thinned out he asked for my number. I don't hand that out easily, so I gave him my social handle instead, which felt like the safer, slower door.
