I am the kind of person who reads the monthly energy report. Daniel used to tease me about it, the way I would sit at the kitchen table with my coffee and scroll through the little graphs the thermostat app generated, frowning at peaks and dips like a cardiologist reading an EKG. He thought it was endearing. I thought it was responsible. We had a mortgage, a heat pump that wheezed every January, and a shared spreadsheet where I tracked every bill down to the cent. I knew our house the way you know your own heartbeat.
