There is a particular jar of strawberry preserves I have bought for nine years. It is a small-batch organic brand from a farm two states over, sold in a squat glass jar with a handwritten-looking label, and it costs more than I will ever admit to a stranger. Daniel mocked it relentlessly. He hated jam, all of it, the way some people hate the smell of licorice. He would not touch the stuff if you paid him. That jar was mine alone, a tiny indulgence in a house we had stopped sharing in most of the ways that count.

I had been gone six weeks. The tour ran from one humid amphitheater to the next, a blur of pressed black coffee and hotel pillows that smelled like nothing. By the end of it I wasn't dreaming of applause or room service. I was dreaming of my own kitchen at seven in the morning, the quiet of it, toast and that absurd expensive jam and the dog asleep on my feet.

I let myself in at midnight. The house felt almost right. Almost. There were two wine glasses drying in the rack when Daniel doesn't drink white. A throw blanket folded the wrong way. A scented candle I had never bought, vanilla and something floral, sitting half-burned on the windowsill. I told myself I was tired and paranoid and that touring makes you read meaning into wallpaper.

Then, out of pure habit, I opened the refrigerator.

The jar was nearly empty. A thin red smear clung to the curve of the glass, scraped down to almost nothing. I stood there in the cold blue light with my coat still on and did the only arithmetic that mattered. I had been on another continent. Daniel would sooner eat the jar itself than the jam inside it. The dog can't open a refrigerator. Somebody had been here. Somebody had stood where I was standing, in my kitchen, in their socks, comfortable enough to make themselves breakfast and use the good jam without a second thought.

I didn't scream. I didn't even feel angry yet. I felt the strange, clinical calm of a person finally being told the truth after months of being managed. Every odd thing that year reorganized itself in an instant. The phone he turned face-down. The weekends he was suddenly too busy to fly out and see a single show. The way he'd started locking the office.

I screwed the lid back on the empty jar and set it on the counter where he would see it in the morning. No note. It didn't need one.

He came down at six, found me at the table, and saw the jar between us like a verdict. He started to ask how the tour went. Then he looked at the jar again, and at my face, and the question died in his throat.

I have headlined arenas. I have sung to ninety thousand people who knew every word. And the loudest thing I have ever heard was the silence of my husband realizing that an empty jar of strawberry jam had already said everything he was too much of a coward to.
