The iPad That Betrayed Him

Our iPad lived on the kitchen counter, a communal device for recipes, news, and the occasional crossword. It was unremarkable, like the eight years of our marriage. I never expected it to become a witness.

That Tuesday morning, I poured my coffee and unlocked the screen to check the weather. Instead of the usual mix of travel deals and kitchen gadgets, the banner ads were relentless: “Divorce? We’ll Fight for You,” “The Perfect Engagement Ring Starts Here,” and “Free Consultation with a Top Family Lawyer.” I blinked, refreshed the page. Same ads, glaring like neon signs.

At first, I laughed. Some algorithm glitch. But the ads followed me through the day—on the news app, in my email, even on a recipe site for chicken casserole. Each ad was a small cut. Why would *my* iPad think I needed a divorce attorney? And why engagement rings? We’d been married long past ring shopping.

Unease settled in. I thought of Michael, my husband of eight years. He’d been working late lately, distracted. He’d started going to the gym, losing weight. I’d chalked it up to a midlife surge, but now the ads whispered otherwise.

That evening, Michael came home with takeout—his usual routine. He kissed my cheek, smelling of aftershave and something floral. “Long day?” I asked, trying to keep my voice light.

“Yeah, the project is killing me.” He grabbed a beer and sat down, scrolling through his phone. The iPad lay between us like a loaded gun.

“Did you use the iPad yesterday?” I asked.

“Uh, maybe. To check a recipe.” He didn’t look up.

“I’m getting weird ads. Divorce lawyers. Engagement rings.” I watched his face. His thumb paused on the screen. A beat too long.

“Weird,” he said, forcing a laugh. “Must be tracking cookies.”

I didn’t sleep that night. The ads replayed in my mind: the ring, the lawyer, the ring, the lawyer. I remembered a credit card statement I’d seen last week—a jewelry store downtown. He’d said it was a watch repair.

By morning, I’d made a decision. I took the iPad to the living room and sat with my coffee, waiting. When Michael emerged for work, I held up the screen. “Tell me, Michael. Why is our iPad convinced you’re leaving me?”

He froze, coffee cup halfway to his lips. “Claire, it’s just—the algorithm—”

“Don’t. I saw the credit card charge. The late nights. The new cologne.” My voice cracked. “Who is she?”

He set down the cup, rubbed his face. “Emily. From work. I didn’t plan this—it just happened.”

“You planned a ring,” I said, pointing at the ad. “You planned leaving.”

He didn’t deny it. He stood there, silent, and I felt the world tilt. The iPad in my hands felt heavy, accusatory.

“I was going to tell you this weekend,” he whispered.

I laughed, a hollow sound. “The iPad told me first.”

He left for work—he still went to work, as if our marriage were a minor inconvenience. I sat on the couch until the afternoon light faded. The iPad screen went dark, then lit up again with a new ad: “Start Your Future Today.”

That night, I packed his things. The iPad stayed on the kitchen counter, glowing like a lighthouse of betrayal. I couldn’t throw it away—it had told me the truth. So I kept it, and every time I saw an ad for divorce or diamonds, I remembered that sometimes the algorithm sees what we refuse to see.
