I was standing at the stove, stirring a pot of marinara, when the local news anchor said, “We’re live at the downtown food festival, where the crowds are huge tonight.” I wasn’t really paying attention—just half-watching while I waited for the garlic bread to toast. Then the screen cut to the reporter, microphone in hand, standing in front of a sea of people. She started talking about the best paella in the city, but my eyes snagged on something familiar.

A man in a red jacket. My husband’s red jacket.

He was walking through the background, his arm looped around a woman’s waist. She was laughing, her head tilted toward his. And then he turned, just slightly, and I saw his profile. The way he ran his free hand through his hair. The way he leaned down to whisper something in her ear.

It was him. Absolutely him.

I dropped the spoon. Marinara splattered the stove, but I didn’t move. I just stared at the television, waiting for the camera to pan away, to prove I was wrong. But it stayed right on them for what felt like an eternity. He squeezed her hand. She looked up at him with that adoring expression I hadn’t seen on his face in years.

He’d told me this morning he was tied up in a mandatory corporate audit. “Windowless boardroom, probably won’t even get lunch,” he’d said, kissing my forehead. I’d packed him a turkey sandwich and an apple. I’d believed him.

Now the smell of burning garlic snapped me back. I turned off the stove, walked to the sofa, and sat down. The news moved on to a story about a lost dog. I didn’t see it. I just saw his face, her face, their joined hands.

I picked up my phone. No texts. No missed calls. I called him. He answered on the second ring, background noise muffled. “Hey, babe, still stuck in this audit. It’s brutal. Can I call you later?”

“Where are you?” My voice sounded flat, foreign.

“In the conference room. Why?”

“The TV is on,” I said. “Channel 5. Live from the food festival.”

Silence. Then a long exhale. “Look, I can explain.”

“Explain what? That you’re holding hands with your secretary?”

He didn’t answer. I heard voices around him, laughter. He was still there, still in the middle of the festival, still with her.

I hung up.

He came home two hours later. I was sitting on the same spot on the sofa, the television off, the marinara cold in the pot. He walked in, rain dripping from his coat—it had started drizzling. He didn’t wear the red jacket. He’d probably thrown it in the trash.

“We need to talk,” he said.

I held up my phone, the screen showing a photo I’d taken of the television. His face, frozen mid-laugh, her hand in his. “This is from the news. You’re holding hands with a woman. You told me you were at work.”

He sat down across from me. “I didn’t want to hurt you.”

“You didn’t want to get caught.”

He didn’t deny it. He just stared at the floor, shoulders slumped. I thought about our fifteen years together. Our first apartment, his proposal on the boardwalk, the way he used to look at me before he learned to look away.

I stood up, walked to the window, and looked out at the wet street. The city lights blurred as tears filled my eyes. I didn’t know what came next. I only knew that the life I’d believed in had flickered and died in a live broadcast I never asked to watch.
