The thing that finally broke me wasn't the footage. It was that she'd asked to borrow my car for it.

Elise worked nights at the hospital, three twelves a week, and somewhere in the last year she'd started taking my car instead of hers. The reason changed depending on when I asked. Her tires were balding. The check-engine light was on. My seats were more comfortable for the long shifts, and her back had been bothering her. I believed all of it, the way you believe small things about a person you've slept beside for nine years. You don't audit the people you love. You just hand them the keys.

I should have noticed sooner that the mileage didn't add up. She drove twelve minutes to work and twelve minutes home, and somehow the tank emptied like she was crossing a state. I told myself it was the cold. I told myself a lot of things in a calm, reasonable voice that I now want to apologize to.

The change in her was harder to explain away. She'd come home at seven in the morning smelling like someone else's cologne and tell me it was a coworker's, that they were packed in tight at the nurses' station. She started showering the second she walked in, before coffee, before kissing me, peeling off scrubs she used to leave in a heap until noon. She bought new perfume and a fitness app subscription and started doing her hair for night shifts, which is a sentence that should have set off every alarm I owned. Who does their hair to spend twelve hours under fluorescent lights?

I want to be clear that I never went looking. I wasn't the kind of husband who reads phones. The truth came to me the way it comes to most people who get to keep their dignity intact for as long as I did: by complete accident, through a door I wasn't even the one to open.

There'd been a break-in. Someone had smashed the window of a delivery van in the staff lot and taken whatever was inside, and the hospital, being a hospital, has cameras on every corner of that lot. A friend of mine, Marcus, works in their security office. We've known each other since school. He spent an afternoon scrubbing through three nights of footage looking for a man in a hood near a white van, and he found the man, eventually, and reported it, and that should have been the end of his week.

Except the cameras don't only watch vans.

He called me on a Tuesday and asked if I had a minute, and there was something in how he said it that made me sit down. He didn't want to be the one telling me. I could hear that. He said my car had shown up in the corner of the lot, the far corner under the dead light where the cameras barely reach, parked at hours that didn't match her shift. He said he was sorry. He said he wasn't going to send me anything, that I shouldn't make him, that I should just believe him.

I made him.

It wasn't graphic. It didn't need to be. It was my car, my plates, the little dent on the rear bumper I'd been meaning to fix. And there was Elise in the passenger seat that should have been empty, leaning across the console into a man who was unmistakably not me, his hand in her hair, the two of them parked in the dark like teenagers who hadn't learned yet that the world has eyes. Fabian, I'd learn. Another nurse, from a different floor. The cologne. The coworker she always quoted.

I watched it once. I have never watched it again. But I don't have to, because it plays on its own now, behind my eyes, every time she says my name.

The worst part wasn't even the man. It was the staging of it. She had taken my car so that if anyone she knew walked past, they wouldn't recognize hers. She had used me as camouflage. My car was the alibi for the affair the whole time, and I had handed her the keys with a kiss and told her to drive safe, three nights a week, for the better part of a year.

When I asked her, she didn't cry first. That detail stays with me. First she went very still and asked who had told me, like the betrayal that mattered was the one against her secret. The tears came after, when she understood there was footage, when she understood that this wasn't a thing she could talk me out of in that calm, reasonable voice we'd both gotten so good at.

I gave her back her own car. I kept mine, with the dent I still haven't fixed, because some part of me wants to remember that the evidence was sitting in my driveway the entire time, and that the only thing I was ever guilty of was trusting the person who borrowed it.
