I have always been a light sleeper. My mother used to say I came into the world already listening, already braced for something. For most of my life that felt like a flaw. On the night everything ended, it felt like a curse with a purpose.

Maya and I had been together four years. We shared a one-bedroom on the third floor of an old building near the canal, the kind of place where the radiators clanked and the streetlight outside our window turned everything a soft, underwater amber. I loved that light. I loved waking at odd hours just to watch it fall across her shoulder while she slept, to feel the warmth of her back against mine and think, with the dumb certainty of someone who has never been wrong about the big things, that I had gotten lucky.

That night I woke around three. Not slowly, the way you do from a dream, but all at once, the way you do when a sound has reached down and pulled you up by the collar. A rhythm. Steady, deliberate, breathing layered over it. For a few seconds my half-asleep brain tried to make it ordinary, told me it was the pipes, the neighbors, the wind against the old glass.

Then I understood that the bed was moving, and that the warmth I had assumed was Maya pressed against me was simply the empty dent where she had been.

I turned over very carefully. I think some animal part of me already knew, and wanted the last second of not-knowing to last as long as it could. In the amber light I saw her, and I saw the shape of a man I had never met, and I saw the terrible, unhurried intimacy of two people who believed themselves alone.

I did not shout. I did not throw anything. I just said her name, once, in a voice that came out smaller than a four-year-old's.

She looked at me. That is the part I cannot unsee, even now, two years later. There was no scramble, no horror, no clutching of sheets. She met my eyes across the eighteen inches that had once held both our sleeping bodies, and with a calm that has rearranged how I understand the entire relationship, she said: "I thought you were asleep."

As if that were the offense. As if waking had been my mistake.

I got up. I pulled on yesterday's jeans in the hallway with my hands shaking so hard I missed the loops. I walked to the all-night diner on the corner and sat in a booth until the sky went gray, drinking coffee I couldn't taste, turning that sentence over and over like a stone in my mouth.

Because here is what undid me, in the end. Not the man. The man was nothing, a stranger, a symptom. What hollowed me out was the arithmetic hidden inside her excuse. *I thought you were asleep.* It meant the plan had a margin. It meant my unconsciousness was a feature she had counted on, a condition she had weighed and bet against, in our bed, beneath our window, in our light.

I never went back for most of my things. Some doors you close softly, not out of kindness, but because you finally understand they were never really yours to slam.
