He accused me of cheating on a Tuesday, over reheated pasta, in the calm voice people use to deliver bad news they've rehearsed.

I laughed at first. I thought it was a joke, or a clumsy attempt to start a fight about something else, the way couples do. But Julian — my husband — didn't laugh back. He set down his fork and looked at me like I was a stranger who'd broken into his house and was now eating his dinner.

"I know, Iris," he said. "I've known for a while."

There was nothing to know. That was the maddening part. I worked, I came home, I texted him photos of the dog when he traveled. But he had details. He said I'd been "distant." He said I'd started locking my phone. He said I'd come home late three Thursdays in a row, and when I reminded him those were the staff meetings he'd helped me prep for, he just shook his head slowly, like he pitied me.

That's how it started. Not with a slammed door. With pity.

Over the next month he built a case the way a lawyer builds one, brick by patient brick. He'd mention an offhand thing I'd said and twist it until it pointed somewhere ugly. He'd ask where I'd been, then ask again an hour later, comparing my answers for cracks. When I got upset, that was evidence too. "Guilty people get defensive," he said.

The worst thing gaslighting does isn't make you angry. It makes you tired. After a while I stopped defending myself because defending myself only proved his point. I started keeping receipts — literal ones — in case I needed to account for an afternoon. I started narrating my own day like a suspect. I'd lie awake replaying ordinary moments, wondering if I had, somehow, done something I couldn't remember. That's the thing nobody tells you. If someone insists hard enough that the sky is green, you start to wonder about your own eyes.

So I decided to prove it. Not to him — to myself. I wanted one clean, undeniable record of a normal day, something I could hold up and say, see, this is what my life actually looks like.

We'd recently put in a small security system after a string of break-ins on our street. A camera over the front door, one above the garage angled at the driveway, and a little interior cam in the car that Julian had insisted on, "for safety." I figured I'd pull the car footage from one of my so-called late Thursdays and watch myself drive straight home, alone, boring, innocent.

The car's interior camera had no footage for that Thursday. Or the one before. Or the one before that. The clips were simply gone — the camera had been switched off from the app for weeks. My account didn't have permission to change that setting. Only the admin did. Julian was the admin.

A colder thought arrived: why would he disable the camera that would clear me, if he was so desperate to catch me?

The driveway camera was a separate device, on a separate app, one I'd set up myself and he'd never bothered to learn. It had been recording the whole time. Every arrival. Every departure. Time-stamped, automatic, dumb and loyal in the way only machines are.

I scrolled back to that Thursday. There I was, headlights swinging into frame at 6:52 p.m., home from the meeting, alone, exactly as I'd said. I almost cried with relief. I had my proof.

But the camera kept rolling through the week, and I kept watching, because I couldn't stop.

Friday afternoon, 1:14 p.m. A day I'd been out of town for a conference. The car pulls into the driveway. Julian gets out of the driver's side. Then the passenger door opens, and a woman steps out — heels, sunglasses, a tote bag I didn't recognize. He walks around the car to her. The way he touched her face, the way she leaned into it, the easy familiarity of two people who had done this many times — I didn't need audio. I didn't need the interior camera he'd so carefully turned off. The driveway told me everything in silent, grainy color.

He'd covered the camera that pointed at himself. He'd forgotten the one pointing at the door he had to walk through to get inside.

I watched it four times. Then I exported the clips, emailed them to myself and to my sister, and went back to making dinner, because he'd be home soon and I wanted my hands to be steady.

He came in, kissed my cheek, asked about my day. I asked about his. He said it had been quiet. Slow. He'd mostly worked from home.

"Funny," I said. "You went out around one."

He froze for half a second — just half — and in that half second I saw the whole marriage, the accusations, the months of pity, the camera he switched off. He'd been describing himself the entire time. Every crime he hung on me was a confession he was too cowardly to make.

I didn't shout. I slid my phone across the counter with the video already playing.

"You should have remembered the driveway," I said.

I'm not tired anymore. It turns out the sky was blue the whole time.
