I Called the Courthouse Twice

The distance was the perfect cover, and I didn't realize it until much too late.

Daniel and I had been together for almost a year, all of it long-distance — he was three states away, and we made it work the way couples do now, with late-night calls and good-morning texts and a shared calendar counting down to the next visit. I trusted him completely. When you only see someone in carefully planned weekends, you take an enormous amount on faith. You have to. There's no other way to do it.

It started, as these things do now, with something small and idle. One slow evening I typed his name into a search engine — not snooping, just the harmless curiosity you indulge about someone you love. And a name surfaced alongside his. A woman. I clicked over to Facebook and there she was again, tangled up in his results, tagged in places, surfacing in photos she had no obvious reason to be in. I told myself she was a cousin. A coworker. An old friend.

Then I saw the way she was referenced, and the word that stopped me cold: *wife.*

When I asked Daniel about her, he didn't even hesitate. Ex-wife, he said. Long divorced. Ancient history, barely worth mentioning, which was why he hadn't. He was so smooth, so unbothered, that I almost let it go. I *wanted* to let it go. It's amazing how badly you'll want the comfortable lie to be true.

It was a friend of mine who said the sentence that changed everything. We were talking it through and she shrugged and said, "You know divorce records are public, right? Just call the county and check."

I sat with that for a day. Then I found the number for the county courthouse where he lived, and I called.

My heart was going so hard I could barely get the words out, but I asked: could they confirm a divorce on record under his name? The clerk checked. Nothing. No filing, no decree, no record of any divorce at all. I thanked her, hung up, and immediately decided I must have done it wrong — given the wrong county, misspelled something, made some mistake that explained it away.

So I called again. A different clerk this time. I gave his name, then *her* name, then — because I'd done my homework by now — her maiden name too, every spelling I could think of. The clerk was patient and thorough, and the answer came back exactly the same all three ways. There was no divorce. Not under his name. Not under hers. Not under anyone's.

Because there had never been a divorce. There was only a marriage, ongoing, in a house three states away that I'd never been invited to, belonging to a woman who had been quietly, legally his the entire time he was mine.

I want you to appreciate what he did next, because it's the part I still can't get over. When I told him what the courthouse had said — twice, in two separate calls, three different ways — he *still tried to convince me he was divorced.* He didn't fold. He didn't confess. He looked the public record in the eye and kept lying, as if my certainty were the problem and not his marriage.

That was the moment it ended, cleanly and without a single tear in front of him. Not when I found her. Not even when the courthouse confirmed it. But when I handed him irrefutable proof and watched him decide to keep lying anyway, because to a man like that, the lie isn't a tactic. It's just who he is.

The distance had made it so easy to believe him about everything. In the end, it was a stranger at a county courthouse, on the second call, who told me the truth he never would have.
