We were eating lunch at the kitchen table, the same table we'd assembled ourselves the week we moved in. Tuna sandwiches. The dishwasher humming. A cardinal kept landing on the feeder outside the window, and I remember thinking I should refill the seed before the weekend.

Marisol set down her glass of iced tea and said, in the same tone she might use to mention the forecast, that she'd been cheating on me. For most of our marriage. Sixteen years, three kids, a minivan with a dent I kept meaning to fix.

She didn't cry. That was the part that broke something in me before the words even fully landed. There was no tremble, no flinch, no apology gathering behind her eyes. She just looked at me the way you look at a coworker when you tell them the printer's jammed again.

I asked how many. I don't know why that was the first thing — maybe because a number felt like something I could hold, something with edges. She tilted her head, actually considered it, and gave me a figure that made the room tilt. Dozens. Over the years. She said it the way you'd estimate how many times you've changed a tire.

I kept waiting for the real version. The smaller, survivable version. It didn't come.

Then she explained the dinner parties.

For years she'd been the one who organized them — the Saturday-night gatherings with the couples from the cul-de-sac, the school fundraiser crowd, the people we waved to at soccer games. I'd thought she just loved hosting. The cloth napkins. The little place cards. The way she'd spend all afternoon on a roast.

That, she told me, was the part she enjoyed most. Not the secrecy of meeting someone in a parking lot. The dinners. Sitting at the head of our table, passing the potatoes, making eye contact across the candlelight with a man she'd been with — while his wife laughed beside him, while I poured the wine, while our kids watched a movie upstairs. The thrill, she said, was the not-knowing in everyone else's faces. Being the only one in the room who held the whole map.

I thought about every one of those evenings. The man who'd helped me jump-start my car in February. The couple whose daughter carpooled with ours. The friend who'd toasted our anniversary with tears in his eyes. I'd been a guest at my own betrayal, and I'd refilled everyone's glasses.

She finished her sandwich while I sat there. She actually finished it. Then she carried her plate to the sink, rinsed it, and asked if I was going to eat mine.

I wasn't. I haven't, really, sat at that table since. The cardinal still comes to the feeder. I never did refill the seed. Some part of me doesn't want to give it a reason to keep coming back to a house where, it turns out, I'd never once seen what was actually on the table.
