I only sat down at the family computer to pay the electric bill.

The desktop in our study was the slow, communal machine nobody loved — sticky keyboard, a screensaver of the kids at the lake from three summers ago. Daniel did his real life on his phone now, the way everyone does. So when I nudged the mouse and the screen woke to his email, already logged in, I almost closed it without thinking. Almost.

It was the little orange dot beside the Drafts folder that stopped me. Twelve unsent messages. Who keeps twelve unfinished emails? I'm a tidy person. I clicked it the way you'd straighten a crooked picture, just to make the number go away.

The first draft had no recipient. No subject. It just began, *I keep thinking about the way you laughed in the car.*

I read it twice before my brain agreed to understand it. Then I opened the next one. And the next.

They weren't being sent anywhere. That was the clever, sickening part. Two people writing into the same blank space, saving instead of sending, each one logging in to read what the other had left behind. No outbox. No trail through any server. A locked room they'd built inside an empty folder, and Daniel had walked out and forgotten to shut the door.

I learned her in fragments. She called him a nickname I'd never heard. She knew he hated his brother. She knew the scar on his shoulder and asked, in one line, whether it still ached when it rained — and it did, it always had, and I'd rubbed it a hundred nights without ever being thanked the way she thanked him for telling her.

I scrolled until my hand went numb on the mouse.

The last draft was longer than the rest, and it was the one that finally moved the floor out from under me. It wasn't a love letter. It was a plan. Dates. After the holidays, once the second car was paid off. A figure he'd set aside in an account I'd never seen, listed beside the words *enough to land softly.* He'd budgeted his exit the way we'd once budgeted the kitchen renovation, sitting at this same desk, his hand on my knee.

*I'll leave her soon,* the draft read. *I just need the timing to be clean.*

Clean. I remember staring at that word until it stopped looking like a word.

I didn't cry, not then. I went to the kitchen and poured a glass of water and watched my hands not shake, which surprised me. Upstairs I could hear him laughing at something on his phone, easy, at home, a man who believed his locked room was still locked.

I went back to the study. I didn't delete anything. I didn't reply. I opened a new draft of my own, typed a single line, and saved it where they would both find it.

*I read everything. The timing is clean now.*

Then I logged out, and for the first time in months, I felt the thing he'd been planning in secret arrive exactly on schedule — just not for him.
