Daniel never lost anything. That was the first thread I should have pulled.

In four years together I had watched him alphabetize his spice rack and keep his receipts in labeled envelopes, so when he came home Thursday night patting his jacket pockets and cursing about his missing earbuds, the whole performance felt slightly off-key. He said he'd dropped them in Marcus's car on the commute, that they must have slid under the seat, that Marcus wouldn't be back from his work trip until Sunday. He said all of this very quickly, the way you read a paragraph you've already memorized.

"Just track them," I said, half teasing. "They cost more than my coat."

He laughed and waved it off and changed the subject to dinner. But the dismissal stuck in my throat like a fishbone. We shared everything on that account, my photos backing up next to his, our devices a little constellation on one screen. I had helped him find his keys, his tablet, the charger he swore he'd left at the gym. Why would tonight be different?

So after he fell asleep, I opened the app.

I expected a gray dot on some suburban street, parked outside Marcus's apartment, exactly where a forgotten pair of earbuds in a coworker's car would sit. I told myself that. I rehearsed the relief I'd feel.

The map didn't show the city. It zoomed and zoomed and kept zooming, north, past the highways I knew, past the exits we took to see his mother, into a green smear of forest three hours away. The pin dropped on a cluster of cabins beside a lake. A bed-and-breakfast. The kind of place with a wood-burning stove and a two-night minimum and a name that sounded like a poem.

I stared at it until the screen dimmed. Then I tapped the location and let the satellite view load, slow and merciless, until I could see the gravel lot, the row of little rooflines, the single car parked at the end. It hadn't moved in hours. It wasn't going to move along any highway. It was exactly where someone settles in for the weekend.

The earbuds weren't lost. They were just somewhere he'd hoped I'd never look.

I sat in the dark living room while he slept down the hall, and I did the cruelest thing I could think of. I made him a cup of coffee in the morning. I asked if he'd heard from Marcus. I watched him tell the lie a second time, smooth as ever, while a screenshot sat quietly in my phone, timestamped, with a little green dot resting in the woods.

He'd spent years teaching me he never lost anything. He just forgot that the things we carry remember exactly where we leave them.
