Xander had stuttered since he was a boy. By the time I met him he'd mostly mastered it, but under stress the old hesitations crept back, so when he announced last winter that he'd booked a course of speech therapy, I felt nothing but tenderness. Tuesday evenings, six o'clock, a private clinic across town. He'd come home a little quiet, a little tired, and I'd warm his dinner and ask how it went, and he'd say it was hard but good. I believed him. Why wouldn't I? He was finally doing something kind for himself.
