I spend nine hours a day reading other people's lies. That is the job they don't print in the brochure. You teach Steinbeck and comma splices, but mostly you learn to feel the seam where a real voice ends and a borrowed one begins. After fifteen years in a high school English classroom, I can smell a machine the way some people can smell rain coming.

So I should have known. Maybe, on some level, I already did.

Daniel had been working late from the home office for months, which I told myself was the promotion talking. He'd grown tidy in a way that wasn't like him, careful with his phone, careful with his words. I am not a snoop. I want that on the record. I went into his study that Sunday for a stapler, because mine had jammed on a stack of midterms, and there it was on the corner of his desk, printed on actual paper, face up like it wanted to be found.

"My darling," it began. And then four paragraphs of the most beautiful nothing I have ever read.

I sat down in his chair. My pulse should have been in my throat, and it was, but underneath the shock something colder and more professional took over. Because I knew this voice. I had failed this voice forty times that semester. The relentless symmetry of the sentences. The adjectives arriving in polite, predictable pairs. The way it gestured at feeling without ever once stubbing its toe on a real one. "You are the calm harbor in the restless ocean of my days." No human being who has actually loved someone writes a clause that clean.

She had used a chatbot. Whoever she was, she had been too lazy, or too hollow, to find her own words for wanting my husband. She had typed a prompt and let a machine counterfeit a heart, and Daniel had printed it out and kept it like a treasure.

That was the part that broke something loose in me. Not the affair itself, which I would understand later in the dull, ordinary way you understand a death. It was that he had been moved by it. My husband, who knew the sound of my voice in the dark for twenty years, had read four paragraphs of algorithmic syrup and felt chosen.

I didn't scream. I photographed the letter with my phone, the way I'd photograph plagiarism before a hearing. Then I went back to my own desk and graded the rest of my essays, every one of them, while my marriage sat in pieces in the next room.

When he came home I slid the paper across the table. He started to explain, and I held up one hand the way I do when a student insists the essay is their own work.

"Daniel," I said. "I read for a living. You couldn't even hand me an original betrayal."
