Marcus had started posting gym selfies again, and I told myself that was a good thing.

For most of our nine years together he had been the kind of man who treated the camera like an enemy. Then, sometime around his thirty-eighth birthday, he bought new lifting shoes, a sleeve of protein bags, and a membership at one of those twenty-four-hour places with the blue lighting and the rows of mirrors. He came home flushed and talkative. He stood a little straighter. I remember thinking, with the dull relief of a long marriage, that this was just a man deciding to grow old on his own terms.

The selfies appeared on his Instagram story three or four nights a week. Always the same composition: phone held at chest height, one bicep curled toward the mirror, the wall of glass behind him doubling the dumbbells into infinity. I would see them pop up while I was loading the dishwasher or folding the kids' laundry, and I would tap a little heart and feel faintly proud, the way you do about a partner who is trying.

The first wrong note was so small I almost let it pass.

He started showering the moment he walked in the door. Not the casual rinse of a man who had sweated, but a long, deliberate scrubbing with the bathroom fan roaring. He began leaving his phone face-down on the counter, which he had never bothered to do. And his gym sessions, once a tidy hour, stretched to two, then to two and a half, on nights that didn't make sense, like a Tuesday when he'd already gone that morning.

I didn't accuse him. I am not proud of the alternative, which was to lie awake building him excuses I didn't believe. People talk about the moment of discovery as if it arrives like a thunderclap. For me it was quieter than that. It was a slow erosion, a thousand tiny inconsistencies wearing a groove into my trust until one night the groove was deep enough to hold a doubt.

That night he posted another selfie.

I was in bed, the room dark except for the screen. The flex, the mirror, the blue light, all of it familiar by now. But the photo was sharp, almost obscenely high-resolution, and something in the lower corner caught the light differently than the rest. His wrist. His smartwatch, turned just enough toward the glass to be legible in the reflection.

I pinched the screen and zoomed.

The watch face had lit up at the exact instant he took the photo, the way they do when you raise your arm. A message banner sat across it, crisp and white, reversed in the mirror but unmistakable once my brain flipped the letters. *Can't wait for tonight.* And beneath it, the contact name that had sent it.

Not a name at all. Just one word. *Baby.*

I lay there for a long time and did not cry. I read it again, and again, certain I had misunderstood, willing the pixels to rearrange into something innocent. They didn't. He had photographed his own infidelity and broadcast it to four hundred followers to show off a body I had stopped being allowed to touch.

The cruelest part was how careful he had been everywhere else. The face-down phone, the long showers, the deleted threads I later found he'd been clearing every single night. He had built a fortress around the secret and then, out of pure vanity, hung a window in the wall and pointed a floodlight at it.

I took a screenshot. I took a screenshot of the screenshot, terrified the story would vanish at midnight and take the proof with it. Then I went downstairs and sat at the kitchen table where we had eaten dinner as a family six hours earlier, and I waited for the timestamp on that message to mean what it meant. *Tonight.* He had kissed our daughter's forehead and told me he was tired and gone back out at nine.

When he came home near midnight, hair wet again, I had the photo open on my phone, zoomed in, waiting on the table between us like a third place setting.

He looked at it for a long moment. I watched him understand. I watched him realize that the mirror he loved so much, the one that had made him feel young and wanted and seen, had been the one thing in the room telling the truth the entire time.

He didn't deny it. There was nothing left to deny. The reflection had already confessed for him, in high definition, to everyone we knew.

I deleted the heart I'd left on the post. It felt like the smallest divorce I would ever file.
