The thing I remember most is how ordinary the evening was. That is what undoes me now, when I let myself go back to it. The sprinklers had just clicked off two yards over. The light had gone that thick, syrupy gold that only happens in late June, and I had a glass of wine sweating on the arm of the lounge chair. I had been waiting all week for exactly this: an hour alone in the garden before Daniel got home, a true-crime podcast queued up, nobody needing anything from me.

We had spent a small fortune on that patio speaker. Daniel insisted. It was the kind of thing he loved, a sleek matte cylinder that he had mounted near the pergola, loud enough to fill the whole backyard with sound that felt like it was coming from inside your own skull. He had paired his phone to it once, months ago, to show off some playlist at a barbecue, and I never thought about it again. Why would I.

I heard the garage door start to lift and his car turn into the driveway, the familiar crunch of tires on the gravel apron. And then my podcast cut out.

For half a second I thought the speaker had glitched. There was that little electronic stutter devices make when they hand off a signal. Then a woman's voice came through it. Not a host, not a guest. A low, laughing, intimate voice, mid-sentence, saying his name the way I used to say his name, and then saying things after it that I will not write down, things meant only for the inside of a parked car. The speaker was magnificent. High fidelity, Daniel had bragged. Every word of it landed in that golden quiet like a stone through a window.

His phone had drifted back into range as he pulled in, and the speaker, dumb and loyal, had simply grabbed the louder, closer signal and broadcast it to the whole street.

I did not move. I could not. I sat there with the wine going warm in my hand and listened to a stranger describe my husband to me. Through the slats of the fence I could see his car, the brake lights still glowing, and inside it the silhouette of him scrambling, jabbing at the screen, the dome light flashing on as he flung the door half open and then yanked it shut again. The voice kept going for three more seconds. It felt like three years.

Then silence. Just the sprinklers next door, ticking back to life.

He came around the side gate a minute later holding his briefcase like a shield, that careful, rehearsed smile already arranged on his face. "Hey. Long day," he said. And I watched it die there, that smile, when he saw me looking at the speaker, then looking at him, and understood that the machine he was so proud of had said everything he never would.

I did not scream. I think he expected screaming. I just asked him, very quietly, what her name was. He told me the truth might be the only honest thing he ever told me. He had been doing this for months, he said, only during the commute, always hanging up at the end of the street so he could walk in clean.

He had built the whole thing to be untraceable. He never counted on the house listening too.
