The lie was so cozy I helped him pack for it.

Daniel had been talking about the cabin for two weeks. A friend of a friend owned a place up past the tree line, no Wi-Fi, no bars of signal, nothing but a wood stove and a stack of paperbacks. He said he was burning out at work, that his brain felt like a browser with forty tabs open, and that three days of pure quiet would reset him. I thought it was the healthiest thing he had ever wanted. I rolled his thick socks into pairs. I bought him a headlamp because I worried about him stumbling to the outhouse in the dark.
