The thing I remember most is that I was holding the leash.

It was the kind of cold that makes the air taste like metal, the first real frost of the season, and our dog had wandered out into the back garden the way he does and refused to come when called. So I did what I'd done a thousand nights before. I grabbed the leash off the hook by the door, slid my feet into the boots I never bother to lace, and went around the side of the house to the patio to whistle him in.

That was the only reason I was out there. That's what I keep coming back to. If the dog had come when I first called, I'd still be asleep next to a stranger and not know it.

The patio looks straight into our living room through the big sliding glass doors. Wren liked them because they let the light in. We never closed the blinds back there; there's nothing behind our house but a field. So when I rounded the corner, the room was lit up like a stage, and I was standing in the dark, and I could see everything.

Wren was on the couch. Our couch, the one we'd argued about in the store for an hour because she wanted the gray and I wanted the blue, and she won, because she always won the small ones. And she wasn't alone.

I knew him. That's the part that took my legs out from under me. Yusuf. A man from her work, someone I'd shaken hands with at a holiday party, someone whose name had come up at dinner a dozen times in the easy, throwaway way you mention people who are supposedly nothing to you. Yusuf said this. Yusuf thinks that. I'd never once let it land.

They were kissing. I want to be careful here, because what undid me wasn't anything graphic. It was how ordinary it looked. How unhurried. She had her feet tucked up under her the exact way she does when we watch a film. He reached over without looking and moved a strand of hair off her face, and she leaned into his hand like she'd done it a hundred times, because she had. You can't fake that. The first time, people are clumsy, careful, breathless. This was a couple who had a routine. This was muscle memory.

I should have moved. I should have done something. Instead I stood on the cold patio in my unlaced boots, holding a leash, and I watched.

I watched for ten minutes. I know because I checked my phone afterward, in the car, when I needed a fact to hold on to. Ten minutes I will never get back and never stop seeing. He got up at one point and went to our kitchen and came back with two glasses of the wine I'd been saving, and he knew which cabinet the glasses were in. He didn't open the wrong door first. He just reached for the right one. Such a small thing. It's the small thing that told me how long this had been going on.

The dog came and sat next to my feet, finally, leaning his warm weight against my shin, and I clipped the leash on him out of pure habit, my hands doing something while the rest of me stopped working. I thought about all of it at once. The late "team dinners." The phone that had started living face-down. The new perfume. The way she'd flinch, lately, when I came home earlier than expected, then cover it with a smile so fast I'd told myself I imagined it. I hadn't imagined any of it. I'd just chosen the version of my life that let me sleep.

The cold got into my hands. At some point I realized I was shaking, and I couldn't tell anymore if it was the temperature or something else. And I made a decision, if you can call it that. I didn't want to scream. I didn't want to put my fist through the glass, though God knows part of me did. I wanted, more than anything, for her to see my face and understand that I had seen hers.

So I walked to the door, and I slid it open, and the warm air and the smell of the wine hit me, and the dog trotted in ahead of me like nothing in the world was wrong.

They came apart so fast it would have been funny in a film. Wren's mouth opened and no sound came out. Yusuf stood up too quickly and knocked one of the glasses; it didn't break, it just rolled, leaving a long red line across the gray cushion she'd chosen over the blue.

I didn't yell. I unclipped the leash, hung it back on its hook, and in the quietest voice I had, I said the only true thing I could find.

"He knows where the glasses are."

Then I went upstairs and started putting my things in a bag, and behind me I could hear her saying my name, over and over, like it was a door she could still get through.

It wasn't. I'd watched it close for ten minutes from the other side of the glass.
