The nurse said it would only be a few hours. That was the last normal sentence I remember from that night.

We'd come into the ER at nine because Daniel doubled over in the kitchen, gray-faced, sweat running down his temples. By eleven they were prepping him for emergency surgery, an appendix about to rupture, general anesthesia, the whole frightening machinery of it. I stood in that cold corridor in a hoodie I'd thrown on without thinking, holding his wedding ring in a little plastic bag like it was something fragile that might break.

Just before they wheeled him through the double doors, he reached up and pressed his phone into my palm. His hand was shaking. "Hold this for me," he whispered. His eyes were already going soft from whatever they'd given him. I squeezed his fingers and told him I loved him, and I meant it with my whole chest.

I sat in the waiting room with his phone in my lap. I wasn't snooping. I want that on the record. I only tapped the screen to check the time, the way you do a hundred times an hour. And that's when I noticed.

The apps were gone.

Three hours earlier we'd been lying in bed laughing at videos, passing his phone back and forth. Snapchat had been right there in the corner of his home screen, the little yellow ghost. Instagram beside it. Facebook below. Now there were three empty squares where they used to be, the icons of everything else shifted up to fill the gaps. He had deleted them. All of them. In the narrow window between the gurney and the operating room, while a needle was going into his arm, my husband had used what might have been his last conscious minutes to scrub his phone clean.

I felt the floor tilt. A man does not panic about Snapchat when there's a chance he won't wake up. Unless there's something on Snapchat he's more afraid of than dying.

I didn't cry. I just sat very still and let the cold spread through me, piece by piece, like the realization was being installed rather than felt. Reinstalling the apps took ninety seconds. He'd logged out, but I knew his password; he used the same one for everything, the name of the dog we had before we were married. The messages loaded one row at a time.

Her name was Renata. She lived two streets over. The conversations went back fourteen months.

When the surgeon came out smiling to tell me everything had gone perfectly, that Daniel was in recovery and asking for me, I thanked her and shook her hand and felt absolutely nothing. He'd survived. I already knew, standing there, that the marriage hadn't.

He'd been so afraid of being caught that he reached for his phone before he reached for his own life. In the end the deleting was the confession. The blank spaces told me everything the messages only confirmed.
