It wasn't a lipstick stain or a stray hair that undid him. It was an absence — a tidy, deliberate hole in a record he thought no one would ever read.

The whole thing started with a package. A small thing, a replacement filter for the kitchen tap, marked delivered on a Thursday afternoon while I was at work. It never made it inside. Niall said he hadn't seen it. So I did what any mildly annoyed person does: I opened the doorbell-camera app to scroll back and catch the courier in the act, maybe a porch pirate, maybe a misdelivery I could screenshot and complain about.

The camera is one of those motion-triggered ones that saves a clip every time someone so much as walks a dog past our gate. On a normal day there are forty, fifty little thumbnails — the postman, leaves, the neighbor's cat, me leaving for work in the dark. A busy, boring diary of our street.

So when I scrolled to that Thursday and found a clean stretch of nothing between two and three in the afternoon, I assumed the camera had glitched. Wi-Fi drops. It happens. I went back a week to compare.

There it was again. The previous Thursday. Two to three: empty. Not a single clip. Before it and after it, the usual clutter of motion. But that one hour sat there scrubbed smooth, like a swept floor.

I want to tell you I felt something dramatic right then. I didn't. I felt the small, cold curiosity of someone noticing a pattern they don't yet understand. I made tea. I sat down with the phone and I went back, week by week, like turning the pages of a calendar in reverse.

Thursday. Gap. Thursday. Gap. Thursday. Gap.

Months of them. Always the early afternoon. Always exactly an hour, give or take. The camera kept its faithful diary six days a week and went conveniently blind on the seventh.

A glitch doesn't keep an appointment. A glitch doesn't clock in.

The app, it turns out, keeps a quiet little activity log if you know where to dig — a record of clips deleted, and when, and by which account. I dug. Every one of those vanished hours had been deleted manually, usually that same evening, usually around the time Niall liked to "take the bins out" or "check the car." Forty seconds in the settings menu, week after week, erasing the same window of his own life.

That was the part that hollowed me out. Not the gap itself — the discipline of it. He had not been careless and lucky. He had been careful. He had built a routine of forgetting, a small weekly ritual of making sure I would never see whoever it was who walked up to our door at two o'clock and left by three.

Because that's what a deleted clip tells you. A blurry stranger on the porch you can dismiss, explain, argue away. But you cannot argue with a man who took the time to remove the evidence of a thing he insists never happened. The erasing is the confession. He had to know there was something to hide before he could hide it.

I didn't confront him that night. I'm not proud of how calm I became, but the calm was useful. The next Thursday I told him I had an off-site meeting and would be back late. I left at the usual time, drove four streets over, and parked where I could see our gate.

At ten past two a car I didn't recognize pulled up. A woman got out — younger than me, comfortable in the way you only are somewhere you've been many times. She didn't ring the bell. She didn't have to. The door opened before she reached it.

I stayed in the car the full hour. I don't know what I was waiting for. Maybe to be wrong. At nine minutes past three she came out, said something over her shoulder that made him laugh in the doorway, and drove off. By the time I got home that evening, the camera log already showed the day's clips deleted. He'd done it before I'd even walked through the door, the way you'd wipe down a counter out of habit.

I put my phone on the kitchen table, face up, the log still open, and I said, "Tell me what happens between two and three on Thursdays."

He looked at the screen. I watched him reach for the easy lie and then watch it die in his mouth, because there was nothing on the screen to deny — only the shape of everything he'd taken away. You can't talk your way around a hole. There's nothing to grab.

We are not married anymore. The filter for the tap arrived eventually; I found it behind a planter, exactly where the missing footage would have shown the courier leaving it. A nine-dollar part led me to all of it.

People assume betrayal arrives as a scene — a caught embrace, a screen full of messages. Sometimes it arrives as a silence shaped exactly like the truth. He deleted the hours so I'd never know. In the end, the missing hours were the only thing that told me everything.
