The notification came in on a Tuesday night, and I almost didn't open it.

His name sat at the top of my messages, this man I'd met maybe three times. We weren't friends, not really. We were the kind of acquaintances who orbit the same group of people, who end up at the same backyard barbecue or the same birthday dinner because someone you both know decided to invite everyone. The last time I'd seen him, he'd been standing next to his wife at a crowded patio table, one hand resting on the back of her chair while she laughed at something. I remembered thinking they looked comfortable together, the easy way long-married people lean.

So when I opened the message and read it, my brain refused to process the words at first.

He wanted to know if I'd want to hook up. Just like that. No buildup, no pretense, no clumsy compliment to soften the ask. And then the part that turned my stomach: if I wasn't interested, no hard feelings, we could just keep it between you and me.

Between you and me. As if there were already an "us." As if I'd be doing him a favor by keeping his secret.

I sat there with my thumb hovering over the screen, half-convinced it was a hack, a prank, a phone that had fallen into the wrong hands. I scrolled up to his profile to check, the way you do when something doesn't add up.

That was when I saw it.

His profile picture. The current one. The active one, the one anyone who messaged him would see floating right beside his words. And in it he was standing shoulder to shoulder with his wife, both of them squinting into bright sunlight, her head tilted toward his. It was the picture he'd chosen to show the world. It was the picture sitting at the top of the very conversation where he'd just asked a near-stranger to cheat with him.

He had forgotten. Genuinely forgotten that she was right there, smiling out of his own face, while he typed.

I don't know what I expected to feel. Anger came, but underneath it was something colder and sadder. A man so casually arrogant that the woman he married had become invisible to him, just wallpaper behind his own ambitions. I screenshotted everything. The message, the timestamp, that photo of the two of them in the sun.

Then I found her.

I typed and deleted the message to his wife a dozen times. I apologized before I even told her what it was, bracing for her to be furious with me, to shoot the messenger, to call me a liar. My hands were actually shaking when I hit send.

She wrote back within minutes. She didn't doubt me for a second. She thanked me, over and over, for being honest, for being loyal to someone I barely knew when I could have just deleted it and looked away.

I never heard the rest from him. I didn't need to. The marriage was already over the moment he hit send and the moment she saw what I sent her.

He cast a wide net that night. The only thing he caught was himself.
