The city, in its careful, anonymous diligence, had published the patient's movements so the rest of us could check whether our paths had crossed.

I had become a small expert at reading those logs. We all had. You scrolled the timestamps the way other generations read the obituaries, looking for your own name in the negative space. Cafe at 11:40. Pharmacy at 1:15. A bus line, a bakery, the second floor of a department store. The state had built an unblinking machine for tracking the sick, and the side effect was that an ordinary life left a fossil record.

So I scrolled. I was looking for the supermarket near our apartment, for the dry cleaner, for the clinic where I'd taken our daughter on Tuesday. I wanted reassurance. What I found instead was a rhythm.

Motel on the east ring road, 7:50 p.m. A restaurant two doors down, 9:10. Back to the motel, 10:30. The next afternoon, a different motel across the river, then food, then the motel again. It repeated like a heartbeat across fourteen days, a loop with no office in it, no grocery store, no home. Just rooms rented by the hour and the meals eaten between them.

I knew that east ring road. I knew the noodle place at 9:10 because my husband, Daniel, had described it to me once as the canteen near a client site, the one with the good broth, the reason he was always home late that spring. I had believed him the way you believe the floor will hold your weight.

Daniel had been sick the week before. A fever, a cough, three days in the spare room with the door shut so he wouldn't pass it to us. He'd been interviewed by a health worker on the phone, his voice low and tired through the wall. I'd brought him soup and pressed my palm to the closed door like a fool.

I sat at the kitchen table and read the log again, slower, as if the timestamps might rearrange themselves into something innocent. They didn't. The anonymity the city had so carefully preserved meant nothing, because I didn't need a name. I had the route. I had every hour he'd been swearing he was somewhere else, now notarized by the government and posted for the entire municipality to see.

The strangest part was how public it felt. Half the city had received the same alert. Somewhere in those thousands of screens were his coworkers, my sister, the parents from our daughter's school, all of them scrolling past a stranger's shameful little orbit, never knowing it had a face that ate dinner at my table.

He came home that evening and asked what was wrong. I turned my phone to face him, the log still glowing, and watched him read his own two weeks back to himself in cold official type.

He didn't ask how I found out. He already knew. The whole town knew. They just didn't know it was him yet.
