The iPad was a hand-me-down, an old 2018 model I’d factory-reset and loaded with toddler games for Leo’s fourth birthday. For months, it sat unused because the screen had a hairline crack and Leo preferred his dad’s phone. But on a drizzly Tuesday, with Mark at work and the preschool closed for a teacher training day, Leo rediscovered it. He clutched the tablet like a treasure, tapping away at a counting app while I folded laundry in the next room.

Around ten, he got bored and started fiddling with the settings. I heard him giggling at the Siri voice, then a sudden silence. When I went to check, he was staring at the screen, thumb in his mouth. “Mommy, who’s that lady with Daddy?”

I took the tablet. The camera roll was open, and it was filled with photos I had never seen. Hundreds of them, thumbnails of a woman—blonde, smiling, wearing Mark’s favorite blue button-down in one, a hotel robe in another. The dates spanned two years, the most recent from last week. My hands went cold. Leo tugged my sleeve. “Is that a friend?”

I sat down heavily, scrolling. There they were: Mark and the woman at a cabin in the mountains I’d thought was a guys’ trip; at a restaurant I’d suggested for our anniversary; in our own kitchen, the woman wearing my apron, Mark’s arm around her waist. The photos synced automatically when Leo connected the iPad to Wi-Fi that morning. Mark’s secondary iCloud account, which he’d used to back up his work phone, was still logged in under the device’s system settings—something a factory reset hadn’t wiped.

I told Leo it was a game. “Sometimes pictures get mixed up,” I said, my voice too high. He nodded and went back to his blocks. I locked myself in the bathroom and called Mark. He answered on the second ring, chipper. “Hey, babe, what’s up?”

“Who’s the blonde?” I whispered, trembling.

Silence. Then, “What are you talking about?”

“The photos. Your iCloud. On Leo’s iPad.”

He started stammering, something about an old account, a mistake. I hung up. He came home within an hour, face pale, tie loose. I was waiting at the kitchen table, the tablet face-up on the counter. Leo was in his room watching cartoons with headphones.

Mark opened his mouth, but I held up a hand. “Don’t lie. I’ve seen everything. Two years, Mark. In our home, in our bed. She wore my apron.”

He sank into the chair across from me, head in his hands. “I’m sorry. It’s Emily from the Denver office. It was supposed to end last spring, but she—”

“She what? Kept sending photos to your cloud?” My voice cracked. “Did you ever think about Leo? About me finding out?”

He didn’t answer. I stared at the rain-streaked window, the spot where we’d hung a family photo last Christmas. I felt hollow, like someone had scooped out my ribs. “I want you out by the weekend,” I said, surprising myself with the steadiness.

That was three weeks ago. The iPad now sits in my closet, a silent witness. Leo still asks for it sometimes, and I haven’t deleted the photos. They’re evidence, I tell myself, not just of betrayal but of my own blindness. Every time I see a notification from the cloud, I flinch. The truth came through a child’s toy, in pixels and thumbnails, and it changed everything.

Last night, I finally removed Mark’s iCloud. The screen went blank. I sat in the dark and cried, not for him, but for the moment Leo asked, “Is that a friend?” and I couldn’t say yes.
