I was in a hotel room in Portland, eleven at night, half a continent away from the house we'd bought together, when I decided to be funny.

The conference had drained me. I missed home in that low, aching way you only feel in a stranger's bed under scratchy sheets. So I opened the app for our smart lights — the ones Daniel had insisted on installing two summers ago, the ones he'd spent a whole Saturday syncing while I rolled my eyes — and I started flicking the living room on and off. Just a little ghost-in-the-house joke. I pictured him on the couch, startled, then realizing it was me, then texting me something dumb like *spooky*. I pictured us laughing about it.

He called instead. Within seconds.

I answered, already grinning. "Boo," I said.

But his voice came out clipped and low and furious in a way I'd never heard aimed at me. "What the hell are you doing? You scared the absolute crap out of her. Stop it. Stop messing with the lights, you're freaking her out."

*Her.*

I remember the exact texture of that pause. The hum of the hotel mini-fridge. The thin strip of hallway light under my door. My own thumb, frozen over the screen where the little bulb icon still glowed.

"Scared *who*, Daniel?"

The silence on his end was the loudest thing I have ever heard. I could practically watch the realization climb up his throat. He'd assumed I knew. He'd assumed the flickering was a message — that I'd somehow seen, that this was my way of telling him I'd caught them, that I was tormenting the woman sitting in my house, on my couch, under the lights I'd just turned into a strobe.

He'd confessed before he understood there was nothing to confess to. I hadn't known anything. I'd just been lonely and playing with a phone.

"Who is in our house," I said. Not a question anymore.

He started talking fast — *it's not, she's just, you don't understand, let me explain* — the entire crumbling vocabulary of a man who has run out of road. And the worst part, the part that still finds me at red lights and in checkout lines, is that I didn't yell. I just sat very still and listened to him try to rebuild a lie that the lights had already burned down.

I tapped the app one more time. The living room went dark.

"Get her out of my house," I said, and hung up, and booked the first flight home for six the next morning, and lay there in the dark of a city I didn't know, weirdly grateful — of all the things to feel — for a Saturday two summers ago when he'd insisted on making our home a little bit smarter than he was.
