I found it while looking for the spare phone charger, which is the most ordinary reason in the world to open a drawer you don't usually open.

It was tucked at the back of Mara's nightstand, still in crisp packaging, the kind of thing that comes with a discreet brown box and no return address. I am not a prude, and I want to be clear about that. If she had handed it to me with a grin on a Friday night, I would have laughed and poured the wine. What unsettled me, standing there in the gray light of a Tuesday morning, was the simple arithmetic of it. I had not bought it. And in eleven years of marriage, Mara had never once mentioned wanting anything like it.

So my first instinct was not jealousy. It was something smaller and more pathetic. I wanted proof that she had bought it herself, some boring order confirmation that would let me close the drawer and feel foolish for the spike of adrenaline in my chest. We shared her email password for the streaming logins and the flight bookings, the way couples do when they stop thinking of anything as separate. I told myself I'd search "order," find an Amazon receipt, and forget the whole thing by lunch.

There was no order confirmation.

What loaded instead, when I typed a stray search term, was a wall. Months of automated notifications from a payment app, the little ping emails that pile up and that nobody ever reads. The same name appeared again and again. A man. I won't pretend I recognized him; that almost made it worse. He had been sending Mara money in steady, deliberate amounts, and beside each transfer sat a cheerful little note the app makes you write.

"Half the room, gorgeous."

"Suite was worth it."

"Same place next month?"

I sat down on the edge of our bed, the packaging still in my hand, and felt the floor of the last two years quietly give way beneath me. The girls' weekends. The spa trip in the spring, the "wine country thing" in the fall, the long birthday weekend she'd come home from glowing and sunburned and full of stories about a friend named Dana I had never actually met. I had driven her to the airport for some of those. I had carried her bag.

She had been splitting hotel rooms with him. Tidily. Down the dollar. Settling up afterward like two responsible adults balancing a shared expense, and the app had been faithfully mailing me the ledger the whole time, an accountant I never hired, archiving a story she thought no one was reading.

I scrolled until my thumb went numb. The math was effortless now. Dates, cities, amounts. A second life, kept on a spreadsheet, paid for in increments.

When she got home that evening she asked, lightly, if I'd found the charger.

I said yes. I had found everything I was looking for, and a great deal that I wasn't.
