For ten years I knew exactly what my husband loved, and a tender love song was not on the list.

Daniel was a heavy metal man down to the marrow. Our garage thrummed with distorted guitars while he tinkered with his motorcycle. He had opinions about drummers the way other men had opinions about football. When a soft pop ballad came on the kitchen radio, he would groan theatrically, mime gagging, and lunge for the dial. "Manufactured feelings," he'd say. "Three chords and a lie." It was a running joke between us. I would turn the volume up just to watch him suffer, and he would chase me around the counter pretending to be wounded by the saxophone.

So our marriage had a soundtrack, and that soundtrack was loud, and I thought I understood it completely.

The last week of December, we were curled on the sofa with tea going cold, doing the silly little ritual we did every year. We pulled up our year-end listening summaries to compare. Mine was predictable: the same three singer-songwriters I cried to in traffic, a podcast about unsolved cases, a Christmas album I refused to be embarrassed about. I read mine out loud and he laughed at all the right places.

Then he scrolled to his.

I expected the usual wall of bands with names like wounds. There was plenty of that further down. But sitting at the very top, his single most-played song of the entire year, was a slow, syrupy, contemporary love ballad. The kind he claimed gave him hives. The number beside it was not small. Hundreds of plays. Hundreds.

I laughed, because at first it was funny. "Babe. Babe. Explain this."

He didn't laugh.

I watched his face do something I had never seen it do. The color drained out of it. His thumb hovered over the screen like he could undo it by force of will. "That's — that has to be a glitch," he said, and his voice had a crack running through it. "The app messes up. It counts stuff playing in the background." He kept talking, layering excuse on excuse, none of them connecting to the next, and the more he explained the more the floor tilted under me.

Because Daniel never stammered. Daniel argued for sport. The man who could defend an unpopular album for forty minutes could not produce one clean sentence about a three-minute pop song.

I let it go that night. I actually let it go. I told myself people have private, sappy moods. But the song sat in me like a swallowed stone, and three days later, when he was in the shower, I picked up his phone.

The listening history was the easy part. The song appeared in dense clusters, always in the late afternoon, always on the days he said the commute had been brutal. Played on repeat. Ten, twelve, fifteen times in a single drive home. Over and over, the same swelling chorus, in the privacy of a car I had ridden in a thousand times.

Then I opened his messages, and there she was. A name I half-recognized from a work event, a woman who laughed too long at his jokes. And pinned at the top of their thread, sent months ago with a little heart, was a link to that exact song. "Our song," she'd written. "Play it and think of me."

He had been playing it and thinking of her. In the car. Every single day. While I packed his lunch and ironed the shirts he wore to see her.

The cruelest part was not even the affair. It was the architecture of it. He had spent a decade building an identity in front of me — the man too tough, too discerning, too real for soft love songs — and that whole persona had been a wall he hid behind. The one genuine, helpless, romantic thing in him he had saved entirely for someone else. He couldn't fake disliking her. The numbers gave him away because feeling, real feeling, leaves a trail.

I sat on the edge of the bathtub until the water shut off and he came out toweling his hair, and I held up the phone, and I said the only thing I could think to say.

"Play it for me. Out loud. The song you hate."

He couldn't.

I'm gone now, and the divorce is nearly final. He has the motorcycle and the metal and the garage that's too quiet. I have a new apartment and a strange new peace. Sometimes that ballad still comes on in a store, and I don't change the station anymore. I just stand there and let it finish, because it told me the truth when he wouldn't, and I've decided to be grateful to it.
