Daniel bought the dashcam after a man in a delivery van rear-ended him at a red light and lied about it to the insurer. He talked about that camera the way some men talk about a new watch. Dual lens, he kept saying. Records the road and the cabin. Nobody is ever going to call me a liar again.

I thought it was sweet, honestly. A small obsession. He mounted it himself one Saturday, ran the cable along the headliner so it wouldn't dangle, and tested it three times in the driveway while I drank my coffee on the porch and watched him narrate to no one.

So when a stranger clipped our bumper in the grocery lot that spring and drove off, I was the one who said it. Pull the card. We'll have him.

Daniel was at work. The laptop was on the kitchen table. I slid the little SD card out of its slot the way he'd shown me, plugged it in, and started scrubbing through hours of gray asphalt and brake lights, looking for the moment of the hit.

I found the fender-bender. Eleven seconds, license plate clear as a photograph. I should have stopped there.

But the files kept playing, one bleeding into the next, and that was when I understood the part he'd forgotten. The cabin lens films the inside of the car. And a microphone that films the inside of the car records everything said inside the car. Every commute. Every call routed through the Bluetooth he was so proud of.

His voice came out of the speakers, low and easy, talking to a woman named Renata.

I don't know how long I sat there. The light in the kitchen changed from white to gold to gray and I didn't move. It wasn't one call. It was months of them, looped and overwritten and saved, an hour each way, the long unhurried confessions of a man who believed the words evaporated the second he hung up. He talked to her about us. About the house. About a future with my name carefully sanded out of it. He laughed in a register I hadn't heard at our own table in two years.

He'd been so careful. He never let her near the car, because the camera might see her. It never occurred to him that the camera could hear him.

When he got home he was cheerful, asking if I'd gotten the plate. I had the laptop turned toward his chair and one file already cued. I didn't say anything. I just pressed the spacebar.

I watched his face do the math. Watched him remember, in real time, exactly what that machine had been doing all along.

He'd spent four hundred dollars and a whole Saturday to make sure no one could ever call him a liar. In the end the only person it caught was him.
