The envelope was the kind you can buy in packs of fifty at any drugstore. Padded, beige, my address printed on a sticker label in a plain font. No return address. No name. Inside, wrapped in a single fold of printer paper, was a black USB drive. The paper was blank. I turned it over twice looking for writing that wasn't there.

I almost threw it out. I want you to understand that. I stood at the kitchen counter with the recycling bin open under the sink and the thing in my hand, and some small animal part of my brain said, do not look at this, and I didn't listen.

We had been in that house six years. A quiet street, the kind where everyone waves but nobody really knows anybody. Marisol and I had bought it right after the wedding, stretched ourselves thin for the backyard because she'd always wanted a pool. She used to say it like a joke that wasn't really a joke. A pool and a hammock and nothing to do on a Sunday. We'd put in the pool the second summer. It cost more than the kitchen.

That spring I'd taken a contract job two towns over, longer hours, a commute that ate the mornings. Marisol worked from home doing graphic design, her own hours, her laptop on the patio table when the weather was good. I remember being grateful she had the yard. I remember telling people my wife had the better deal, sun on her face while I sat in traffic. I said it without a trace of resentment. That's the part I keep coming back to.

There had been small things. A pool maintenance guy who seemed to come more often than a pool needs. Daniel, young, easy with a laugh, the kind of person who calls everyone "boss." Marisol mentioned him a few times, then stopped mentioning him at all, and I noticed the stopping more than I'd ever noticed the mentioning. She started showering before I got home some days. The patio chairs would be moved. Once I found two glasses in the dishwasher when she'd said she'd been alone. I built explanations for all of it. That is what a trusting man does. He becomes an architect of reasons.

I plugged the drive into my laptop at the kitchen table after she'd gone to bed.

It was a single video file. Aerial. Shot from high up, the way a bird would see our street, the rooftops, the blue rectangle of our pool getting larger as the camera drifted lower. Later I'd piece it together. A man a few houses down had bought one of those hobby drones, was flying it around testing the camera, had no idea what he'd recorded until he watched it back. He didn't sign his name. I think he was ashamed for both of us.

The footage was steady and clear and merciless. Our backyard. The lounger by the deep end. My wife, and Daniel, and no way left to build a reason.

I didn't wake her. I sat in the dark with the laptop light on my face for what must have been an hour, watching the screen go dark and then touching the trackpad to bring it back, like I was checking that it was still real. The house ticked the way houses do at night. I could hear her breathing down the hall.

What I felt wasn't the explosion I'd have predicted. It was quieter and worse. It was every small thing I'd talked myself out of, all arriving at once, lining up and bowing. The moved chairs. The two glasses. The showers. I hadn't been blind. I'd been kind to myself at my own expense, and somewhere a stranger with a flying camera had seen in ten seconds what I'd refused to see in months.

I told her in the morning. I didn't shout. I set the laptop on the counter where we'd had a thousand ordinary breakfasts and I pressed play and I watched her face instead of the screen. She didn't ask who sent it. She didn't ask how. She just sat down slowly in the chair, and the not-asking told me everything the video already had.

We sold the house that autumn. The pool she'd wanted more than the kitchen went to a young couple who waved at me on closing day, full of plans for their Sundays. I almost warned them about something, and then I didn't, because there was nothing to warn them about that they would believe.

I still have the drive. I don't know why. Some nights I think the man who sent it did me a cruelty, and some nights I think he did me the only honest favor anyone managed that whole year. Mostly I think about how the truth had been overhead the whole time, just waiting for someone to look up.
