Das Mikrofon, das er stummzuschalten vergaß

Er sagte seinen Spielfreunden, er sei kurz weg. Nie dachte er daran, wer am anderen Ende des Headsets noch zuhörte.

Daniel's gaming room was the one part of the house he asked me never to clean. Not in a mean way. He just had it arranged the way he liked it, with the cables coiled and labeled, the keyboard angled just so, and the big padded headset hanging on a hook he had screwed into the wall himself. I used to find it endearing. A grown man with a fortress of foam and LED lights, laughing at three in the afternoon with people he had never met in person.

He played most evenings after dinner. I could hear the muffled murmur of him through the wall, the bursts of laughter, the occasional "no way, did you see that." His best online friend was my own brother, Marcus, which I'd always thought was sweet. The two of them had bonded over the same games years ago, before Marcus even moved to our city. On weekends the whole crew would be on together, a lobby of seven or eight voices, and Daniel would surface around midnight smelling like the inside of that room, happy in a way the rest of his life didn't seem to reach.

The first wrong note was small. He started locking the door. Just a soft click when he went in, where before it had always swung open. When I asked, he said he was tired of me wandering in and breaking his concentration. Fair enough, I told myself. I had done that, once or twice.

Then there were the afternoons. He worked from home two days a week, and I noticed the headset murmur starting earlier, on days when none of the usual crew should have been online. When I mentioned it, he said he was just testing new audio settings, talking to himself, running diagnostics. He had an answer for everything, delivered so casually that doubting him felt like the thing I should be ashamed of.

I want to be honest about how long I let it slide. Months. I told myself the locked door meant nothing, the early calls meant nothing, the way he'd flinch and lower his voice when I passed in the hall meant nothing. I am not a suspicious person by nature. I think I simply could not afford, financially or emotionally, to know.

It was Marcus who couldn't pretend anymore.

He called me on a Tuesday, and his voice was wrong, flat and careful, the voice you use when you're holding something that might break. He asked me to sit down. He told me the crew had all been in a lobby that afternoon, eight of them waiting between matches, when Daniel typed that he'd be away from his keyboard for a few minutes.

But he didn't mute his microphone.

That headset was the expensive kind, the one he was so proud of, the one that picked up a whisper from across the room. For nearly four minutes, eight men sat frozen and silent in a voice channel while Daniel's microphone broadcast everything. A woman's laugh I didn't recognize. The door, the same door he had started locking. His voice, low and easy, saying things I will not write down, to someone who was very clearly not testing audio settings.

My brother was on that call. My brother heard it all, in our house, in that room with the cables he coiled so neatly. One of the others had the presence of mind to start recording, not out of cruelty, Marcus said, but because they all knew, instantly, that someone's wife needed to know, and that none of them would ever be believed without proof.

The file arrived in my email an hour later. I sat in our kitchen with my coffee going cold and I listened to my marriage end through a pair of cheap earbuds. The strangest part was not the woman or the words. It was the ordinariness of his tone. He sounded relaxed. He sounded like a man who had done this so many times that it had stopped feeling like anything at all.

When he came out that night, smelling like that room, smiling, asking what was for dinner, I slid my phone across the table with the audio already loaded. I didn't say a word. I just watched his face do the thing faces do when the floor disappears.

He asked, eventually, how I found out. As if the method were the betrayal.

I told him the truth. He told eight people he'd be gone for a few minutes, and forgot that one of them was my brother, and forgot that the door he locked against me had never once locked out the microphone. He built a whole fortress to keep me out, and then he broadcast himself to the world without even knowing.

I packed the next morning while he slept. On my way out I unhooked that headset from the wall, the one thing he asked me never to touch, and I left it on the kitchen table where the dinner he never got would have been.
