The Photos That Synced to My Screen

For nearly six months, my wife slept with her back to me.

I noticed it the way you notice a draft in a house you've lived in for years. Nothing you can point to, just a coolness where warmth used to be. Mara had always been a sprawler, an arm flung across my chest, her cold feet hunting for mine under the duvet. Then, sometime that winter, she started curling toward the far edge of the bed, phone tucked face-down beneath her pillow like a second heartbeat.

The phone became a third person in our marriage. She carried it into the bathroom. She flipped it over the instant I walked into a room. Once, reaching across her at breakfast for the salt, my shoulder brushed it and she snapped "do you mind?" with a sharpness that left the kitchen ringing. I told myself I was being paranoid. I told myself a lot of things that winter.

What she never accounted for was how thoroughly our lives had been stitched together long before any of this began. Years ago, when we bought the family tablet, I'd set it up under our shared account so the kids' school photos and our holiday pictures all landed in one place. She'd forgotten. People forget the plumbing of their own homes. The pipes keep running anyway.

It was a Sunday afternoon, gray and ordinary. Our daughter wanted to see the pictures from her birthday, and I picked up the tablet from the coffee table and opened the photo library to find them. The newest images loaded first.

They were not of our daughter.

They were of Mara, alone, in our bedroom, in the dark. Taken at angles she practiced, lit by the cold blue of a screen, the kind of photos a person poses for when they believe they are completely unobserved. The timestamps told me everything. 1:47 a.m. 2:14 a.m. 3:09 a.m. Hour after hour, night after night, while I slept three feet away, oblivious, her cold feet nowhere near mine.

I scrolled with a hand that didn't feel like mine. Between the photos were screenshots. Conversations she'd saved without realizing the camera roll copied them too, that the cloud was quietly handing each one to a screen on the other side of the house. I didn't read all of them. I didn't need to. A single name, repeated, in a tone she hadn't used with me in a very long time, was enough.

I sat there on the couch with my daughter's birthday two swipes away and a stranger's marriage filling the screen.

The strange thing is what I felt wasn't rage. It was a terrible, clarifying quiet, like the moment a fever finally breaks. For six months I'd been arguing with my own gut, calling it jealous, calling it unfair. Now the gut had been right all along, and there was nothing left to debate.

I set the tablet down. I found the birthday photos on her account, showed them to our daughter, smiled at the candles and the frosting on her chin. And somewhere in that smile I understood the marriage was already over. The phone she'd guarded so carefully had never been the danger. The danger was everything we'd once decided to share.
