I knew for twenty-three days before I served the lamb.

I want to be precise about that, because the precision is the only thing that kept me sane. The morning I found the messages, I did not throw my phone. I did not scream. I stood in the kitchen with the kettle screaming for me, and I read the entire thread twice, and then I set the phone face-down and made my coffee exactly the way I always do. Two sugars. The good mug. I learned that day that a person can break completely while their hands stay perfectly still.

The man was Daniel. My best friend since we were nineteen, the one who stood beside me at my wedding and gave a speech about loyalty that made my mother cry. My wife, Claire, had been meeting him on the afternoons she told me she was at her pottery class. There was no pottery class. There was a hotel near the ring road with a fountain in the lobby, and she described that fountain to him in a text as if it were ours.

I could have confronted her that night. I rehearsed it a hundred times in the shower, the speech getting louder and uglier each time. But ugly was exactly what they wanted from me. An ugly, sobbing husband is easy to manage. They would have a story by morning. It was a mistake, it meant nothing, you've been so distant lately. They would close ranks, and I would become the unstable one, the one who snooped, the one who couldn't be told the truth gently. I refused to hand them that script.

So I planned a dinner party instead.

I invited Daniel and his wife, Priya, who knew nothing about any of it. I chose the menu myself. I bought the wine Claire likes, the peppery red, and I poured it generously. For an hour everything was warm and golden and loud, the four of us laughing about a holiday we'd taken together two summers ago, back when I still thought that summer had been the happiest of my life.

We were halfway through the main course when I put my fork down.

I waited until Daniel was mid-sentence about a football match. I looked at Claire, only at Claire, until the table went quiet on its own.

"I know," I said. "I know about you and Daniel. I've known for three weeks."

Priya laughed first, the reflexive laugh of someone certain they've misheard a joke. Then she looked at her husband's face, and the laugh died in her throat. Claire's wineglass stopped halfway to her mouth. Daniel said my name, just my name, like it was a question he didn't want answered.

I didn't shout. I told them, calmly, what I knew, where, and for how long, while Priya's hand crept up to cover her mouth. I had taken the one thing they relied on completely: the privacy to lie. There was no narrative to spin now. The truth was on the table beside the lamb, in front of everyone who needed to hear it.

I stood, thanked them for coming, and went upstairs. Behind me I could hear two marriages ending in the same room at the same time.

I have never regretted the dinner. Only the twenty-three days I had to smile through to get there.
