Auf seinem Handy waren zwei Taschenrechner

Ich wollte nur etwas Speicher auf seinem Handy freimachen. Dann bemerkte ich dieselbe App zweimal, nebeneinander, und konnte es mir nicht erklären.

Marcus handed me his phone without a flicker of hesitation, and that should have been the end of it.

We were on the sofa, a movie neither of us was watching murmuring in the background, and I'd offered to clear out his storage because his camera kept refusing to save photos. He unlocked it, dropped it in my lap, and went to make tea. A man with something to hide does not do that. I remember thinking exactly those words, almost smugly, as I started swiping through screens of apps he never used.

That's when I saw them. Two calculators. Identical icons, the same little orange-and-grey grid, sitting one square apart on the third page. I assumed it was a glitch, some duplicate the system had spat out. I tapped the second one anyway, the way you press a bruise just to confirm it's there.

It opened a calculator. A completely normal calculator. I almost laughed at myself. I typed a few sums, watched the numbers stack up obediently, and felt foolish for the cold little thread that had pulled tight in my stomach. Then, out of nothing but idle habit, I keyed in the year he was born, the way you'd punch in any string of digits while your mind drifts.

The screen went black for half a second. When it came back, it wasn't a calculator anymore.

It was a vault. A grey lock screen with a polished little keypad and a thumbprint icon, the kind of app that's built for exactly one purpose, the kind you have to go looking for and pay for and hide on purpose. My hands had gone strange and far away. The birth year had already let me in.

I want to tell you I closed it. I didn't.

Inside were folders. Neat, dated, labelled folders, the work of a man who is meticulous about the things that matter to him. He had never once organized our shared photos like that. Holidays, my birthday, the years of us, all of it lived in one chaotic blur on the other app. But this. This was archived with the care of a museum collection. Hundreds of images. Videos. A woman I didn't recognise, then one I did, a name from his office Christmas party two years back, smiling in a hotel room I had never stood in.

The kettle clicked off in the kitchen. I heard him take down two mugs.

I sat there with the truth glowing in my lap and listened to him whistle, tunelessly, the way he always did, the most ordinary sound in the world. He came back carrying tea, asking if I'd managed to free up any space.

I had, actually. I'd freed up an enormous amount. The whole hollow future I'd been carrying around for him, gone in the time it took to tap an orange icon twice.

I set the phone face-down on the cushion and looked at him until the whistling stopped.
