Daniel went dark on a Thursday, and by Saturday I had stopped sleeping.

Two days of unanswered texts. Two days of calls that rang four times and dropped to voicemail, his cheerful recorded voice telling me to leave a message after the tone. I left eleven. I told myself the boring explanations first, the way you do when you love someone and want the floor to stay solid under you. Dead phone. Work crisis. A migraine that had folded him into a dark room. I built a small museum of innocent reasons and walked through it at three in the morning, touching each one.

When he finally called, it was Sunday afternoon, and his voice came out thin and gravelly, like he was performing exhaustion.

"I've been in the hospital," he said. "A car clipped me crossing Welbourne Road. They kept my phone in a bag with my clothes, I couldn't reach anyone. God, I'm so sorry, I know you must have been terrified."

And here is the thing I am not proud of. My first feeling was relief, warm and total. He wasn't gone. He wasn't ignoring me. He was hurt, poor thing, alone in a ward under fluorescent lights. I almost cried into the phone. I asked which hospital. He hesitated half a second too long before naming one across town, and that half second was a splinter I couldn't stop pressing.

Because Daniel was a runner. Not a casual one. He logged everything, every kilometer, with the devotion some people give to prayer. He had once made me wait twenty minutes in a parking lot because his watch hadn't synced and he refused to leave until the run was "saved." His fitness profile was public. He was proud of it.

I don't know what made me open the app while he was still talking. Some cold, clear part of me that had gone quiet and started reading the data instead of his voice. I scrolled to his recent activity.

Friday morning. A run. Recorded, saved, time-stamped during the exact window he claimed he'd been unconscious in a hospital bed without his phone. Five kilometers, a brisk and steady pace, the little GPS line snaking through streets I recognized at once.

They were the streets around Claire's apartment. His ex. The one he'd sworn was "ancient history," the one whose name I wasn't supposed to mind.

I sat there with the phone against my ear, his fake hospital story still spilling out, and I watched that bright trail loop past her building, pause, and loop back. He hadn't even bothered to turn off the tracking. He was so busy inventing a broken body that he forgot the watch on his wrist was telling the truth the whole time.

"Which leg did they put the cast on?" I asked, very gently.

The silence after that was the loudest thing I have ever heard.

I didn't shout. I just said I hoped his run had been worth it, and I hung up, and I deleted the eleven unsent worries I'd been carrying for two days. The floor, it turned out, had never been solid. I'd only been standing very still.
