The tablet was the last thing of hers I expected to betray her.

It had been sitting in the bottom drawer of the spare room for months, buried under takeout menus and a tangle of charging cables, ever since Mara moved out and left the house feeling like a museum of a marriage. I only dug it out because our daughter wanted to watch cartoons and the living room remote had vanished. The screen lit up without asking for a password. And there, in the corner, still glowing like a porch light no one had thought to switch off, was her account. Logged in. Patient. Waiting.

I should have closed it. Instead I sat on the edge of the bed and let an old ache walk back into the room.

For the last two years of us, Mara had a ritual. Three, sometimes four afternoons a week, she'd kiss the top of my head, say "I'm going to Mom's," and disappear until dinner. I never questioned it. Her mother was lonely; they drank too-sweet coffee and complained about the neighbors. It was the most ordinary alibi in the world, which is exactly why it worked. Grief and trust are close cousins. You don't audit the people you love.

But that night, curiosity moved my thumb before my conscience could object. I opened the maps app and found the timeline, that quiet little feature that records where a phone has been, minute by minute, as faithfully as a dog waiting by a door. I picked a Tuesday at random. Then another. Then a whole month.

Her mother's street barely appeared.

Instead, a single address kept surfacing, over and over, a house on the far side of town in a neighborhood we'd never had any reason to visit. The blue line drove there at two in the afternoon and didn't move again until five. Day after day. Week after week. The map laid it out with the cold neutrality of a witness who has no stake in your heartbreak.

I might have talked myself out of it. A coincidence, a friend, a yoga class. But the photos undid me. Everything she'd snapped on her phone had quietly synced to the same account, and the map stitched them to their locations like pins through a butterfly. A kitchen I didn't recognize. A man's grey coat thrown over a chair that wasn't ours. Her own reflection, laughing, in a hallway mirror that had never hung in my home.

I sat very still for a long time, the cartoons murmuring from the tablet's tinny speaker, my daughter asking why I'd gone quiet.

The strange thing was the calm. Not relief, exactly, but the end of a low hum I'd been living with for years without naming it. Every excuse I'd accepted, every dinner I'd kept warm, every time I'd defended her to my own suspicion, the map had been recording the truth in the background the entire time.

She'd left without taking the one thing that couldn't lie for her. I closed the drawer. Some doors, once you've looked through them, you don't need to open again.
