The reservation had been set for eight o'clock for three weeks. I'd bought a dress the color of dark wine, the kind of thing I'd never wear to anything ordinary, and it was hanging on the bathroom door when his text came in at six forty.

Mandatory late shift. They're keeping the whole department. I'm so sorry, baby. I'll make it up to you.

I read it twice, standing in my anniversary dress with the curling iron still warm in my hand. Eleven years. Daniel had never once been kept for a mandatory anything. He sold commercial insurance from a beige office where the most dramatic event of any given week was the printer jamming. But I told myself I was being unkind. I unzipped the dress, hung it back up, and microwaved leftover rice instead.

The television was on for company more than anything. The local evening news, the anchor with the helmet of unmoving hair, a segment about a new craft brewery opening downtown and the crowds it was pulling on a Friday night. The reporter stood out front of a place called The Anchor Room, gesturing at the bustle behind her while she talked about foot traffic and revitalization.

I wasn't really watching. I was scrolling my phone, half-listening, until the cameraman did a slow pan across the patio to capture the atmosphere. People laughing. Strings of warm bulbs. Glasses catching the light.

And then, three tables back, in perfect focus for the length of one unbearable second, Daniel.

He was leaning across the table toward a woman with copper hair, his hand resting over hers, his head tipped in that close, listening way he used to lean toward me. He was wearing the navy shirt I'd ironed that morning. He was laughing at something she said. He looked relaxed. He looked happy in a way I hadn't seen in months and had blamed on the stress of work, on the mortgage, on the ordinary erosion of two people who'd stopped trying.

The pan moved on. The reporter kept talking about foot traffic.

I rewound it. We still had the old box that recorded live TV, and I rewound it and watched it again, and again, until I'd memorized the exact angle of his shoulders, the copper hair, the small intimate world the two of them had built three miles away while I sat on the couch in sweatpants on our anniversary.

I didn't call. I didn't text. I put the wine-colored dress back on, did my hair, and drove downtown.

I walked onto that patio at nine fifteen, and the look on his face when he saw me standing there in the dress I'd bought for us was the only honest thing he'd given me all night. He didn't even try to explain the copper-haired woman. He just said my name, once, like a question he already knew the answer to.

I had the anchor's voice still ringing in my head. *Revitalization downtown.* Funny. That was exactly what I drove home and started planning for myself.
