The first thing I noticed was the candle.

Lena would leave on a Saturday morning, gone for three, sometimes four hours, and come back with a single scented candle or a pack of dish sponges she didn't need. The receipts told the same story every week: eleven dollars, fourteen dollars, one item, occasionally none at all. She'd say the lines were brutal, the parking lot was a war zone, that she'd gotten talking to someone. For a long time I let it sit, because suspicion felt uglier than the small lies, and I was a coward about ugly things.

There was a superstore off the highway she favored, the kind with fluorescent lights that hum and aisles that go on like hallways in a dream. She went there and only there. I told myself she liked the familiarity. I told myself a lot of things in those months, the way you keep stacking pillows against a door you don't want opened.

What finally cracked it open was the most ordinary thing in the world. Someone clipped my mirror in that store's parking lot and drove off, and I went in to ask if their cameras had caught the plate. The manager sent me to a back room that smelled of burnt coffee, where a young loss-prevention agent named Marcus sat in front of a wall of small grey screens. He was earnest, eager, the kind of guy who took the job seriously when no one else did.

When I gave him the date and the rough time, his face changed. He recognized something. "Oh," he said carefully, "her. We've actually been watching her for a while."

He thought she was a shoplifter. That was the whole misunderstanding that undid my marriage. A woman who came in weekly, lingered for hours, bought nothing or next to nothing, drifted aimlessly through home goods and garden and back again. Textbook suspicious behavior. So Marcus had done his job well. He'd tracked her across cameras for weeks, building his case, following her from the entrance to the far corners of the store in crisp high definition.

He pulled up the footage to show me where she'd been parked. And there she was.

Not stealing. Standing in the seasonal aisle with her hand on a man's chest, laughing the way she used to laugh before me, leaning into him between the patio furniture and the artificial trees. The cameras had caught it all, every week, the meeting spot she'd chosen precisely because it was so boring, so public, so beyond suspicion. She'd built her secret inside the most watched building in town.

Marcus realized what he was showing me about four seconds too late. He stopped the tape, mortified, stammering an apology for something that wasn't his fault at all. I just stood there in that coffee-smelling room and watched the frozen frame, the back of her head, that hand.

I never did get the plate of the car that hit my mirror. It stopped mattering. I drove home past the store, past the lot, and understood that the damage I'd come for was the smallest thing I'd find that day.

She still doesn't know it was a stranger's security camera, doing the wrong job perfectly, that finally told me the truth.
