Lampu Menyala, Begitu pula Kebenaran

I had been planning the party for four months, and I genuinely believed it was the best thing I had ever done for anyone.

Daniel was turning forty in the spring, and he kept saying he wanted nothing, no fuss, just a quiet drink somewhere. So of course I went the other way entirely. I booked the back room of the little brick pub on Carver Street, the one with the warped wooden floor and the dartboard he loved, where we'd had our second date a decade earlier. I made spreadsheets. I tracked down friends he hadn't seen since his twenties. I emailed his sister in Manchester and his old rugby crowd and the three colleagues he actually liked from the logistics firm where he worked.

The hardest part was the secrecy. I told him we were having a low-key dinner with my parents that Friday, and he believed it without a flicker. I recruited his best mate, Owen, to be the decoy, with one job: get Daniel to the pub at eight on the dot for "a couple of pints before the boring family thing."

By half seven the back room was packed. Forty-odd people pressed against the walls, balloons sagging from the rafters, a banner I'd ironed twice. Owen texted: *Two minutes out.* Someone killed the lights. I remember standing at the front in the dark, heart hammering, holding my phone with the camera ready, thinking this was the moment I'd remember forever.

I was right about that part.

The door opened. The lights flooded on. Forty people screamed *surprise* loud enough to rattle the windows.

And there in the doorway stood my husband, blinking in the sudden brightness, his hand laced tightly through the hand of a woman I had never seen in my life.

She was maybe thirty, in a green dress, and she was laughing at something he'd said until the wall of faces hit her and the laugh died on her mouth. For one suspended second nobody understood what they were looking at. Daniel didn't let go of her hand. That's the detail that stays with me. He had a half-beat to drop it, to claim she was a coworker, a friend, anything, and instead he just stood there gripping her like a man clinging to a railing.

The cheering frayed into a confused murmur, then into silence. I watched Owen's face fall as he realized he had personally driven the two of them here in his car.

I didn't scream or throw a drink. I just looked at my own banner over their heads, the one that said HAPPY 40TH DANNY in gold letters I'd cut out at the kitchen table while he texted her in the next room. Months of his "late stock counts." Months of him being too tired, then suddenly humming in the shower. I had read it all as a man relaxing into middle age. He'd been relaxing into someone else.

His sister was the one who finally spoke. "Daniel," she said quietly, "who is that."

He opened his mouth. Nothing came out.

I set my phone down on the nearest table, picked up my coat, and walked past both of them into the cold. Behind me I heard the whole room start talking at once. I had wanted to give him a night he would never forget.

I suppose, in the end, I did.
