She asked if I minded her going, and I said of course not, because that is what you say when you love someone and you trust them and you want to be the kind of man who never makes a woman feel caged.

Renata had been planning the trip for months. A week on the coast of a warm country with three friends she had known since school. Cheap flights, a rented house with a pool, sun and margaritas and the kind of laughing you only do when no one you have to impress is watching. I worked retail and could not get the time off anyway, so I drove her to the airport at five in the morning, kissed her at the curb, and told her to send me too many pictures.

She did. Sunsets. A plate of grilled fish. Her feet in the sand with the caption *wish you were here.* I believed every pixel of it. I taped one of the printed ones to the side of my locker at the store, the one where she was squinting and grinning under a ridiculous straw hat.

She came home tan and rested and a little distant, but I told myself that was just the comedown everyone gets after a good vacation. We slid back into our routine. Three weeks passed. I had almost stopped thinking about the trip at all.

Then, on an ordinary Tuesday afternoon, a young woman I had never seen in my life walked into the store. She did not browse. She came straight to my register, looked at the name pinned to my shirt, and then asked, very quietly, for my last name too. I gave it, confused, half-expecting a complaint or a survey.

"I'm sorry to do this here," she said. "I went back and forth about it for two weeks. But I decided you should have it."

She slid something across the counter, face down. A small square of glossy paper with a thick white border. A Polaroid. An actual developed photograph, the kind you cannot crop or filter or claim was taken out of context.

I turned it over.

It was Renata. In a dim room I did not recognize, between two men I had never seen, and there was nothing ambiguous about it, nothing I could squint away or reframe in my mind as innocent. It was the straw hat that broke me. She was still wearing the straw hat.

"I was on that trip," the stranger said. "A friend of a friend. I'm not telling you this to be cruel. I just kept imagining you not knowing, and I couldn't live with it."

Then she left. No name, no number, no explanation beyond the obvious. Just a person who had decided that a quiet life of not-knowing was the worse fate, and who had tracked down where I worked to make sure I would never have it.

I stood at my register holding that little square while a line formed behind her. I rang up a man buying batteries. I made change. I said have a good one. And the whole time the photo sat in my apron pocket like a stone, the most honest thing anyone had handed me in a year.

I never taped the locker picture back up. I peeled the old one off, the squinting one, the lie one, and dropped both into the trash on my way out that night.
