The house smelled like stale coffee and neglect. I dropped my suitcase in the hallway and flopped onto the couch, eager to numb my mind after a week at my mother's bedside. The TV obeyed my voice command, but instead of launching straight into our show, it paused on the profile selection screen.

Four profiles glowed under the Netflix logo: mine (a red scarf icon I'd chosen years ago), Mark's (a blue rocket), our daughter Lily's (a pink unicorn)... and a fourth. A new one. A cartoon woman with messy brown hair and oversized glasses, labeled "Sasha."

I stared. My fingers hovered over the remote. Sasha. Who the hell was Sasha? Lily was fifteen, she wouldn't create a profile with that name. Mark and I had the only adult profiles since we canceled the kids' account last year. My chest tightened.

I clicked on it. The viewing history was a parade of romantic comedies—"Crazy Rich Asians," "To All the Boys I've Loved Before"—all watched between midnight and 3 AM over the past three nights. While I was gone. While I was sleeping on a twin bed in my childhood room, praying my mother would wake up from her coma.

My hand trembled as I switched to Mark's profile. He'd been watching action movies and a documentary on the Titanic. His history ended at 10 PM each night, neat and orderly. But Sasha's history... it was intimate. Shared popcorn and late-night laughter, the kind of thing you do when you're hiding from the world, wrapped in a blanket that smells like someone else's skin.

I pulled up my phone and logged into our Netflix account settings. The profile had been created four days ago. Four days. He must have invited her over the night I left. Set her up with her own profile so she wouldn't mess up his algorithm—so he wouldn't have to notice her presence in his recommendations. He thought of everything except one thing: that I might come home earlier than expected, or that the TV might forget itself.

I waited until Mark got home from work. He walked in with a pizza box, a smile on his face that dropped when he saw me on the couch, the remote in my hand, the TV still on the profile screen.

"Hey, you're back early," he said, setting the box on the kitchen island. "How's your mom?"

"She's stable." My voice was hollow. "Mark, who's Sasha?"

His face flickered, a split-second of panic he tried to smother with confusion. "What?"

"The profile on Netflix. The one you made for someone you had over while I was gone." I scrolled through Sasha's watchlist, reading aloud: "'To All the Boys I've Loved Before,' watched at 2 AM on May 4th."

He stood frozen, lips parted. Then he sighed, a long exhale that deflated his whole posture. "It's not what you think."

"Then what is it?"

"A coworker. She came over to borrow a charger. She... she made a profile as a joke."

"At 2 AM?" I whispered. "Borrowing a charger at 2 AM, and she stayed to watch two romantic comedies?"

He didn't answer. The kitchen timer ticked. The refrigerator hummed. And I watched the man I'd loved for fifteen years crumble into a stranger.

"I'm sorry," he said finally. "I didn't think you'd see it."

I stood up, the remote clattering to the floor. "You didn't think I'd see that you had another woman in our home, on our couch, watching movies while I was holding my mother's hand?"

He reached for me, but I stepped back. I didn't cry. I just felt a coldness seep into my bones, like the air had been replaced with ice.

Over the next few hours, I packed a bag. He apologized, made excuses, begged. I said nothing. When I left, I glanced at the TV one last time. The profile selection screen was still there, waiting for someone to choose. I deleted Sasha's profile with a click. Then I deleted mine too. Let him figure it out.

Now I live in a small apartment with a new TV. I don't watch Netflix much anymore. Every time I see that logo, I remember the avatar of a woman who wasn't me, and the silent, glowing proof of how easily trust can be erased.

My mom is out of the hospital. She asks why I moved. I tell her I needed a change. She doesn't press. But sometimes, late at night, I scroll through the streaming services on my phone, looking for something I'll never find."
