Marcus lived inside a camera. Three years together and I'd learned that no moment was real to him until it had been framed, filtered, and fed to his eighty thousand followers.

He was a fitness coach with a brand to feed, and the brand was hungry. Abs in golden light. Protein shakes against impossible sunsets. Captions about discipline and grind and showing up for yourself. The version of Marcus online was a man I half recognized.

The travel started slow and then never stopped. Coaching retreats. Content shoots. Brand partnerships that always, somehow, needed him alone in some beachfront town for a long weekend. He'd come home tanned and distant, already editing the next batch of photos on the couch, his thumb moving while I talked to the back of his head.

I never accused him of anything. I want that on the record. I wasn't the suspicious type, or maybe I just didn't want to be the kind of woman who scrolled her boyfriend's feed looking for cracks. But the loneliness of loving someone who is always performing does something to you. It makes you watchful in a way you can't quite name.

That Sunday he posted from Portugal. A solo shoot, he'd said. The photo was him on a striped beach towel, low afternoon sun, those expensive mirrored aviators he never took off. The caption was something about chasing growth. Two thousand likes in an hour.

I don't know why I zoomed in. Boredom, maybe. The way you sometimes study a face you've stopped really seeing. I pinched the screen and slid in close on the lenses, and the whole world went very quiet.

The sunglasses were a mirror. A perfect, polished, high-resolution mirror, and in them, reversed and small but unmistakable, was a woman. Lounging on a second towel just out of frame. One knee up, a drink in her hand, her face turned toward him with an easy familiarity that said she'd been there all weekend. The intimacy of it was worse than the fact of it.

I sat on our bed for a long time, the phone glowing in my lap, looking at a stranger he had photographed without meaning to. He had built an entire false life and then, in his vanity, his beloved reflective lenses had told the truth he was so careful to hide.

I didn't scream when he got home. I didn't even cry, which surprised me. I just turned my phone around at the dinner table and let him look at the same image he'd shown the whole world, the part he'd never noticed.

He went pale, then reached for explanations, then stopped, because there was nowhere to go. The proof was something he had published himself. Eighty thousand people had scrolled past her. I was the only one who saw.

I left the next morning. The strange thing is, I still think about how proud he was of those sunglasses, how he said they made him look like someone going places. He was right. They did. They just showed me exactly where he'd been.
