When Couples Therapy May Help After Infidelity

Couples therapy can offer structure for some relationships, but it is not right for every situation.

Consider fit and safety first

Therapy may help when both people can speak freely, there is willingness to be accountable, and the goal is clarity or repair rather than forcing a verdict. Ask a prospective therapist how they handle betrayal, secrecy, and individual safety.

If there is abuse, coercion, fear, or active deception, individual support and safety planning may be more appropriate. Therapy should never be used to pressure someone to stay.

Frequently asked questions

Does therapy mean we have decided to reconcile?
No. It can also help people understand options and separate more thoughtfully.
