午前2時、彼の心拍数が跳ね上がった

互いを見守るためにフィットネストラッカーを連携させた。静かな出張中、彼の記録には説明できない午前2時の運動が残っていた。

We linked our fitness trackers as a couples thing — a cute, wholesome little ritual. We'd send each other our step counts, gently mock each other for skipping the gym, celebrate a good sleep score. It was supposed to bring us closer. I never once thought of it as surveillance. That's the part that still makes me laugh, in a bitter sort of way.

Sean traveled for work a few times a year, and that spring he went out of state for a four-day conference. Boring, he said. Hotel, panels, bad coffee, early nights. We texted goodnight every evening like always, and I'd glance at his sleep data in the morning the way you'd check the weather — half-aware, barely thinking.

The third morning, the app showed me something that didn't make sense.

At 2:14 a.m., while Sean was supposedly deep asleep alone in a quiet hotel room, his tracker had recorded a sustained spike. Heart rate climbing and holding high for a stretch of time. Movement — real, rhythmic, physical movement — logged in the dead middle of the night. The kind of reading the app cheerfully files under "workout."

I stared at that little graph for a long time. I tried to build an innocent story around it. A nightmare? Your heart rate doesn't hold like that from a bad dream. A midnight run? At two in the morning, in a strange city, when he'd told me he was asleep? Restless tossing? The pattern was too even, too deliberate, too clearly *exertion* for that.

A device strapped to his wrist had quietly recorded his body doing something his mouth would never admit to.

I didn't say anything for the rest of the trip. I let him come home, let him hug me at the door and complain about the flight, and then I sat him down, opened the app, and turned the screen toward him. The little graph. The timestamp. The spike.

"Explain this to me," I said. "2 a.m. Your heart rate. The movement. You told me you were asleep."

I watched him try. I watched him reach for a workout, then abandon it. Reach for a nightmare, then abandon that. Reach for "the tracker glitches sometimes," which is the moment I knew for certain, because nobody blames the machine when they have a real answer. The graph didn't blink. It didn't get flustered. It just sat there, a flat, unfeeling line of truth that he couldn't argue with because his own body had drawn it.

He finally admitted he'd had a coworker up to the room. "It didn't mean anything," he said — they all say it didn't mean anything — and then, unbelievably, he got *angry* that I'd been "spying" on him. As if the thing we'd set up together to be sweet had become my crime instead of his.

It was over that night.

I think about it more than I should. Not the affair, exactly. The *machine.* He spent days carefully managing his texts, his calls, his story, his alibi. He thought about everything a cheating person thinks about. He just forgot the one witness he'd strapped to his own wrist and synced to my phone — a little device that doesn't lie, doesn't take sides, and doesn't know how to keep a secret. It just counts.

It counted everything. Even the part of the night he was sure no one would ever see.
