階段で知った真実

階段の途中で手すりが外れた。救急隊員が「友達がKendrickって子と付き合ってて」と口にした時、私の世界はすべて崩れ落ちた。

I was halfway up the stairs when the railing gave way. It was a stupid accident—I’d been meaning to tighten that loose bracket for weeks, but between work and the endless list of home repairs, it kept slipping my mind. The wood splintered, my hand grabbed air, and then I was tumbling backward, shoulders and hips bouncing off the sharp edges of each step until I crashed into the foyer floor. Pain shot through my ankle, and my wrist felt twisted and hot.

I lay there for a moment, staring at the ceiling fan spinning lazily above, and let out a string of curses. Emily was at work—she’d be home in a few hours, and I didn’t want to worry her. But when I tried to stand, my ankle screamed, and I knew I couldn’t drive myself. I dialed 911, feeling foolish.

The EMTs arrived within ten minutes. A young guy with a crew cut and kind eyes introduced himself as Jake, while his partner, a tall woman named Lisa, knelt beside me and started checking my vitals. Jake asked me a few routine questions—name, date of birth, what happened. I told him my name was David Kendrick, and he scribbled it on his clipboard.

“Kendrick,” he repeated, a faint smile crossing his face. “Funny coincidence. I’ve got a buddy, Derek, who’s been seeing a woman with that last name. Small world, huh?”

I forced a laugh through the pain. “Yeah, I guess. Kendrick isn’t that common.”

“He’s crazy about her,” Jake continued, lifting my ankle gently to check for swelling. “They’ve been together for about six months now. He says she’s the one. What’s her first name? Maybe you’re related.”

Something cold slithered into my chest. “My wife’s a Kendrick too,” I said slowly. “Emily Kendrick.”

Jake’s hands stopped moving. He looked up at me, his face suddenly pale. “Emily? Short brown hair, works at the accounting firm?”

The room went quiet except for the hum of the refrigerator. I felt the blood drain from my face. “Yeah. That’s her.”

Jake’s mouth opened and closed like a fish. He glanced at Lisa, who gave him a warning look, but it was too late. The words were already flying around my skull like angry hornets. Derek. Six months. Emily.

I don’t remember the rest of the ride to the hospital. I remember the bright lights of the ambulance, the beeping monitors, Lisa asking me if I felt dizzy. I remember nodding when I should have said no. I remember Jake sitting in the jump seat, avoiding my eyes, his knuckles white on the gurney rail.

At the ER, I was treated for a mild sprain and a hairline fracture in my wrist. They gave me painkillers and told me to rest. I sat in the discharge area, my phone in my hand, staring at Emily’s contact photo—that smiling face from our vacation last summer. We’d been married twelve years. Twelve years of morning coffee, shared dreams, and whispered promises.

When Emily finally arrived at the hospital, rushing in with a worried expression, I didn’t give her a chance to speak. “Who’s Derek?” I asked, my voice flat.

She froze. The color left her cheeks, and for a second, I saw it—the flinch, the flicker of guilt. Then she tried to laugh, waving her hand dismissively. “What? I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“The EMT,” I said, standing up slowly. “His buddy Derek has been dating a woman named Kendrick for six months. Our last name. My last name.”

She opened her mouth, closed it, and then her eyes filled with tears. Not apologetic tears—angry ones. “Are you spying on me?”

“I fell down the stairs!” I shouted, my voice cracking. A nurse looked our way. “I didn’t plan this. Your secret just came out on a stretcher.”

Emily looked down at the linoleum floor. Her shoulders sagged, and the fight drained out of her. “I’m sorry,” she whispered. “It wasn’t supposed to happen.”

I didn’t answer. I walked past her, out of the hospital, into the cold evening air. The stars were starting to appear, but they looked dim, like someone had turned down the brightness of the world. My ankle throbbed with every step, but the pain in my chest was worse.

I thought about that loose railing, the one I’d been meaning to fix. If I’d fixed it, I never would have fallen. If I hadn’t fallen, Jake would never have said that name. If he hadn’t said that name, I’d still be living in the comfortable lie. Now I was standing in a parking lot, holding a broken wrist and a broken heart, wondering how many other things I’d neglected that were about to give way.

The stairs had finally caved. But so had my marriage.
