I never thought a piece of mail could unravel a marriage. It came on a Tuesday, sandwiched between a credit card offer and a grocery store flyer. The envelope was official-looking, with the New Jersey E-ZPass logo in the corner. David and I both have transponders, but I handle the bills. I opened it absentmindedly, expecting a routine charge. Inside was a violation notice: a photograph of a silver sedan—our car—passing through the Barnegat Toll Plaza on the Garden State Parkway, heading south. The date was last Thursday, 2:47 PM.

I stared at the image. The license plate was unmistakable: XJB-8427. David’s car. But he was supposed to be in the Adirondacks, at a remote cabin he’d rented for a week-long fishing trip. He’d left Sunday morning, kissed me goodbye, promised to call when he had cell service. I hadn’t heard from him since.

The toll plaza was hours away from the mountains, in the opposite direction. I pulled up a map on my phone. The Garden State Parkway runs along the Jersey Shore, past beach towns and boardwalks. Why would he be there? My stomach clenched. I remembered the way he’d hesitated when I asked about the trip. “Just need some time alone,” he’d said, avoiding my eyes.

I called his phone. Straight to voicemail. I texted: “Call me now.” No response. I spent the next hour pacing the kitchen, the photograph clutched in my hand. The paper was warm from my grip. The image showed his car clearly, the sun glinting off the windshield. I couldn’t see the driver, but I knew his silhouette.

When David came home three days early, I was waiting at the dining table, the violation and my phone laid out like evidence. He walked in with a duffel bag, a smile on his face. “Hey, caught a break in the weather. Thought I’d come back.” Then he saw my expression.

“What’s wrong?”

I slid the photograph across the table. “Explain this.”

He picked it up, and I watched his face go pale. His mouth opened, closed. “That’s… that can’t be right.”

“It’s your license plate. Thursday afternoon. You said you were in New York.”

He set the paper down carefully, as if it might bite him. “I don’t know. Maybe I took a wrong turn? I drove through New Jersey on the way back.”

“On the way back? Thursday was three days ago. You said you’d be gone until Sunday.”

He rubbed the back of his neck, a tell he’d always had when lying. “I took a detour. Visited a friend.”

“Which friend?”

“Just an old buddy. You don’t know him.”

I stood up. “Show me the receipts. The cabin rental. Anything.”

“I paid cash.”

“You always use credit cards.”

His silence was answer enough. I thought of the missed calls, the vague texts. The way he’d been distant for months. I thought of the woman I’d seen him talking to at a party last year, the one he’d brushed off as a colleague. Suddenly everything clicked.

“Who is she?”

He didn’t deny it. He just sat down, head in his hands. “I’m sorry. It didn’t mean anything.”

I wanted to scream, to throw something. But instead, I felt a strange calm. The photograph had done its work. It had shown me the truth, pixel by pixel. I picked up my keys.

“Where are you going?” he asked, voice cracking.

“To see a lawyer.”

I walked out, leaving him with the evidence. The toll booth had captured more than a license plate—it had captured the exact moment my marriage ended. The sun glinted off the windshield, and inside, a stranger drove my husband’s car.
