The lie didn't fall apart in a fight or a found text — it fell apart in a cheerful automated email that thanked two people for a stay I thought only one person took.

Reuben and I had done the distance for almost three years. Four hundred miles, two time zones in the winter, a shared calendar color-coded down to the hour so neither of us ever felt like an afterthought. People said long-distance was the hard kind. I used to feel smug about how good we were at it. We talked every night. We mailed each other ridiculous things — a single sock, a pressed leaf, a postcard with nothing written on it but a comma, because that was our joke: to be continued.

He was writing a novel. Had been for years, the way some men are always almost finishing a basement. So when he told me, that February, that he'd booked a cabin for a long weekend to "lock in and get the third act out of my body," I was nothing but proud. A little jealous, even. He sent me a photo of the place before he went: a small wooden cabin with a green door, snow on the railing, a wood stove visible through the window. *Wish me luck. No phone except to call you. Going dark.*

And he did go dark, mostly. We talked twice that weekend, both times short. He sounded tired in a good way, he said. The words were coming. There was wind in the background once, and what I thought was a kettle. I remember telling my sister he was probably the only man in the country actually using a cabin for its intended purpose.

The novel did not appear. It never does. But that wasn't suspicious — nothing was suspicious. That's the part I keep circling. There was no lipstick, no second toothbrush, no strange charge. The months after that weekend were some of our best. He was warmer. Attentive in that particular way I now understand was guilt wearing a nice coat.

Then, in June, I was the one who booked a cabin.

I wanted to surprise him for our anniversary — a place halfway between our cities, neutral ground. I made an account on the same lodging app he'd used, because he'd told me which one, back when he was excited about his retreat. I was scrolling through listings, comparing wood stoves like an idiot in love, when the app suggested I "see places similar to ones your contacts have loved." Some cross-referenced contact-sync thing I'd clicked through without reading.

It pulled up a cabin with a green door.

His cabin. The one from his photo. And under the listing, in the public reviews, was an automated note the host had left — the kind these platforms generate when a host taps a thumbs-up after checkout. I'd seen a hundred of them. Bland, templated, harmless.

*Thank you so much, Reuben — it was a pleasure hosting you and your lovely guest, Selena. You two left the place spotless. Come back anytime!*

I read it standing up. Then I sat down. Then I read it eleven more times, as if the word *guest* might rearrange itself into something I could survive.

Selena. I knew exactly one Selena — a name he'd mentioned twice, both times in the flat, scrubbed way you mention someone you're working hard not to mention. A coworker. The one who *gets the work stuff,* he'd said once, and I'd thought nothing of it because I was a person who thought nothing of things.

I didn't call him crying. I want that on the record, because it's the only thing from that night I'm proud of. I screenshotted the review, the listing, the dates, and the matching photo he'd sent me. I lined them up like a closing argument. Then I called him and asked, evenly, how the cabin had been in February. Quiet, he said. Just me and the wood stove. Lonely, actually — he missed me.

I sent the screenshot mid-sentence.

The silence on a phone call is different from silence in a room. In a room there's at least breathing, a face. On the phone there was just the small electronic hum of four hundred miles, and somewhere inside it, a man deciding which lie to try next. He didn't try one. That was almost the cruelest part — how fast the truth came once it had nowhere left to hide. It hadn't meant anything. It only happened the one time. The cabin, he meant; not the months of her that came before and after.

I hung up while he was still explaining the difference between mistakes and patterns.

I never did finish booking my cabin. I cancelled the search, deleted the app, and kept the screenshot for exactly one week, until I was sure I believed it. The strange grace of it is this: he could have been caught a thousand worse ways, and instead it was a robot, being polite, thanking two people by name for keeping a small wooden room clean.

It really was a lovely guest. Just not the one he told me about.
