The black charger cable was coiled on the kitchen counter like a small, patient snake, and I almost didn't notice it.

Daniel had left for his shift an hour earlier, kissing the top of my head while I half-slept on the couch with the TV murmuring. He'd switched to nights at the logistics firm eight months ago, twelve-hour stretches that hollowed him out and left our marriage running on text messages and reheated dinners. I'd learned to navigate the quiet. I'd learned, mostly, not to mind it.

But the charger bothered me. His phone always died by three or four in the morning, and then I wouldn't hear from him until dawn. I pictured him stranded in that beige break room with a dead screen, and something in me — the part still trying, still tending the marriage like a garden — decided I'd be the good wife. I'd drive it over. A small surprise. A reminder that someone was thinking of him while the rest of the city slept.

I pulled on a coat over my pajamas and drove the empty highway with the heater ticking and the radio low. One in the morning. The office park was a cluster of dark glass towers, and his building's parking garage yawned open, lit a sickly orange. His desk was on the third floor; I'd been there once, at the holiday party, shaking hands with people whose names I'd already forgotten.

I never made it to the third floor.

I saw his car first — our car, the silver sedan with the dent he kept promising to fix — idling in the far corner of the garage, exhaust curling up into the fluorescent haze. The engine was running but it wasn't moving. For one foolish second I thought he might be napping on a break, and I lifted my hand to wave.

Then the shape inside resolved. Two people, too close, in the dim glow of the dashboard. A woman I half-recognized from the holiday party — younger, the one who'd laughed too loudly at his jokes while I'd stood there holding a plastic cup of wine and feeling old.

I stopped walking. The charger was still in my hand, the cable warm from my grip. I stood between two concrete pillars in my pajamas and coat, invisible in the dark, and watched my entire understanding of the last eight months rearrange itself.

The night shift. The dead phone. The dinners I'd wrapped in foil and thrown away. Not a sacrifice for our future. A cover story. An alibi I had been packing his lunches for.

I didn't scream. I didn't knock on the glass. I set the charger down gently on the concrete ledge beside his car, where he'd be sure to find it, and I walked back to my own car with my keys biting into my palm.

Let him wonder how it got there. Let him understand, in that cold parking garage, exactly who had been thinking of him while the city slept.
