노트북 속의 유령

이메일을 확인하려고 그의 노트북을 열었다. '전 여자친구'의 팝업 알림이 둘이 계획한 주말여행을 드러냈다. 대화 기록은 몇 달 전부터 이어져 있었다.

I thought we were building something real. When Alex asked me to move into his apartment, I said yes without hesitation. It was a small one-bedroom in a quiet part of Portland, with creaky hardwood floors and a window that looked out onto a chestnut tree. I spent weeks arranging my books on his shelves, hanging my clothes next to his in the closet, pretending the musty smell of old wood was the scent of a future together.

He told me about Mia early on—a college girlfriend who, according to him, had fizzled out months before we met. "Ancient history," he said, brushing it off with a shrug. I believed him. There were no photos of her, no lingering trinkets. Just a clean slate, or so I thought.

That afternoon, I was alone in the apartment, unpacking a box of kitchen supplies. My phone had died, and I needed to check my email for a work deadline. Alex’s laptop was on the coffee table, still humming from his morning use. I opened it, expecting a login screen. Instead, Windows loaded straight to the desktop. He never turned it off.

I clicked the browser icon, but before I could type, a small window popped up in the corner of the screen. It was an AIM messenger client—the old blue-and-yellow interface I hadn’t seen in years. It must have been set to auto-launch on startup. A contact named "Mia" appeared in a chat window, already typing. Her message materialized in a bubble: "I can't wait to see you next week! Three days and two nights—just us. I've missed you so much."

My breath caught. The cursor blinked beside a text field where she awaited a reply. I didn’t move. My fingers hovered over the keyboard, useless. The message was from Mia. Alex’s ex-girlfriend. The one he said was history.

I scrolled up through the chat log—a history of their conversations going back months. There were sweet exchanges, plans, and a voicemail note from her: "Call me when you're alone. I love you." He had replied with a heart emoji. My stomach turned. The timeline showed messages from that morning, an hour before he left for work. "Can't wait to hold you," he had typed.

I closed the laptop, then opened it again, as if the screen might show a different truth. It didn’t. I sat on the edge of the couch, the silence of the apartment pressing in. The chestnut tree outside rattled its leaves against the glass, a sound that suddenly felt mocking.

When Alex came home that evening, he found me on the couch, laptop open, the chat log still visible. His face went pale the moment he saw my expression. "Emma, let me explain," he started, but I cut him off.

"Explain what? That you’ve been lying to me since we met? That she’s not an ex—she’s your girlfriend?" My voice cracked. He reached for my hand, and I pulled away. "I saw the messages, Alex. 'I love you.' 'Can’t wait to hold you.' That’s not ancient history. That’s today."

He tried to spin it. Said he had been meaning to break up with her, that it was complicated, that we were the real thing. His words felt like sand—slipping through my fingers. I thought about the weekend he had told me he was going on a "work retreat." The late nights he spent "at the gym." Every excuse, every missed call, now had Mia’s name attached.

I stood up, walked to the bedroom, and pulled my duffel bag from under the bed. He followed, pleading. "Please, Emma. Don’t go. I’ll end it tonight."

"No," I said, my voice flat. "You had months to end it. You chose not to. You chose her."

I packed quickly—clothes, toiletries, my laptop. The books I left on the shelf. They were just books. As I walked out the door, he was still talking, but I wasn’t listening. The last thing I saw was his reflection in the hallway mirror, a stranger’s face.

I got in my car and drove. I didn’t know where I was going—just away. The chestnut tree in the rearview mirror grew smaller until it was just a blur of green and shadow. I felt hollow, but also something else: the faint stirring of relief. The ghost in the machine had told me the truth. It was one thing I could trust.
