When you work from home, your messaging app stops being a tool and becomes a room you live in. I have it open before I've finished my first coffee and it's still glowing when I close my laptop at night. After three years on a fully remote marketing team, I could read the little colored dots beside people's names like weather. Green meant present. Gray meant gone. I never thought a single pixel could break a marriage, including mine in the sense that it changed how I saw everyone I worked with.

It started because of my insomnia, not because I was snooping. My youngest had been teething for a week, and I'd taken to scrolling on my phone in the dark hallway at three or four in the morning, waiting for her to settle. One Saturday night, bleary and bored, I opened the work app out of pure habit. And there, at the top of the sidebar, was Daniel's name with a bright green dot beside it.

Daniel was a senior account manager, married, two kids in school photos pinned to his profile. A 4 a.m. green dot on a Saturday is strange but not damning. Maybe he was a fellow insomniac. Maybe he'd left the app open on a desktop. I almost closed the screen. Then I scrolled down, and three names below his, another dot flicked from gray to green at what looked like the exact same minute. It was Priya, the intern we'd taken on that spring.

I told myself it was a coincidence. People keep odd hours. But I'm the kind of person who can't leave a loose thread alone, and the next Saturday I was up again, deliberately this time, phone in hand at 3:55. At four on the dot, both dots turned green within the same breath. They stayed green for two hours. Then, within a minute of each other, they both went dark.

I want to be honest about what that did to me. I wasn't a detective unmasking a villain. I was a tired woman in a hallway feeling something cold settle in my stomach, because I liked Daniel. He remembered my kids' names. He covered for me once when I missed a deadline. I didn't want the math to mean what it obviously meant. So for two more weekends I just watched, the way you press a bruise to confirm it still hurts. Four a.m. Both green. Six. Both gray. Every single time.

Priya was twenty-three. Daniel was forty-one and had a wife who'd commented "miss you already" under his last work-trip photo. The synchronized timing wasn't proof of anything explicit, but it was proof of something. Two people, in two different houses, choosing the same secret hour, week after week, while the rest of us slept.

The hardest part wasn't deciding what I'd seen. It was deciding what to do with it. I'm not HR. I'm not anyone's mother. For a while I told myself it wasn't my business, that adults make their own ruin. But Priya reported to Daniel. He wrote her reviews. He decided whether her contract converted to a real job. Whatever this was, she couldn't have given clean consent to a man who held her paycheck in his hand, and that detail was what finally moved me from watching to acting.

I didn't scream it into a group chat. I took screenshots, timestamped, of the status logs across five consecutive weekends, and I sent them quietly to our HR lead with three plain sentences and nothing else. I didn't speculate. I just laid the pattern out and let the dots speak.

The fallout was quick and very quiet, the corporate kind that happens behind closed video calls you're not invited to. Within two weeks Daniel's account went dark for good. Priya's contract was not renewed, which I still feel sick about, because she was the one with the least power and she paid a real price. There was an all-hands about "professional boundaries in remote teams" that named no one and fooled no one.

Daniel messaged me once before his access was cut, a single line: "Did you do this?" I never answered. I just watched his green dot turn gray one last time.

I think about it more than I should. About how a man can be warm and decent in daylight and someone else entirely at four in the morning. About how the tools we trust to keep us connected are quietly keeping a record of every choice we make. I still live inside that app all day. But now, when I see a green dot glowing at an hour it shouldn't, I don't feel reassured that someone's there. I feel afraid of what they might be doing.
