영화의 밤에 드러난 배신

평범한 영화의 밤이, 아내와 전 남자친구의 외도를 드러낸 알림 하나로 악몽이 된다.

The living room was warm, bathed in the soft glow of the floor lamp and the flicker of the television. I had the laptop balanced on my knee, a bowl of popcorn beside me, and the opening credits of a thriller we’d been meaning to watch. My wife, Emily, was upstairs taking a shower after a long day. It was our usual Friday night routine—low-key, comfortable, ours.

Her MacBook sat on the coffee table, and since my own laptop was in the middle of a system update, I reached for hers. We shared most of our devices; it wasn’t unusual. I logged into the streaming service, scrolled through the options, and settled into the couch. The movie began, and I sank back, letting the tension of the score wash over me.

Twenty minutes in, just as the hero was creeping down a dark corridor, a banner slid down from the top right corner of the screen. It was an iMessage notification. I saw a name I hadn’t heard in years: Mike. Her ex-boyfriend. The preview line read, “I can still feel your hands on my…” followed by the rest cut off.

My thumb moved before my brain could stop it. I clicked the notification, and the Messages app opened.

There it was. A thread between Emily and Mike. The most recent messages were from just two days ago. I scrolled up, my heart hammering. Explicit descriptions of what they had done together. Graphic details of acts I didn’t even know she enjoyed. Dates and times that matched her late-night yoga classes, her quick trips to the grocery store. It was all there, laid out in black and white.

I read through the entire conversation. Flirty, flirtatious at first, then increasingly heated. Love confessions. Plans to meet. The last message from Mike was a photograph—a shirtless selfie with a smirk. Emily had replied with a heart-eyes emoji and the words, “Can’t wait for Monday.”

My hands were shaking. The movie had ended on autoplay; I didn’t notice. The sound of the shower stopped upstairs. I heard the creak of the bathroom door, then her footsteps on the landing. She came down in her robe, toweling her hair, and saw me staring at the screen.

“What are you doing on my computer?” Her voice was light, but I saw the flicker of panic.

I turned the laptop around. “Who is Mike?”

She froze. The towel dropped to her shoulder. “That’s… that’s nothing. It’s an old thread. I never deleted it.”

“The messages are from this week, Emily. They’re from two days ago.” My voice came out flat, hollow.

“I can explain. It was a mistake. I was lonely, you’ve been working so much, and he reached out…” She stepped toward me, hands outstretched.

I stood up, putting the couch between us. “Don’t. Don’t make this about me. You had sex with him. Multiple times. You told him you love him.” The words tasted metallic.

She started crying then, big ugly sobs. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I don’t know what I was thinking. It meant nothing.”

“It meant everything. You wrote it down.” I grabbed my keys from the hook by the door. “I need air.”

I walked out into the cool night. The rain had started, a soft drizzle that soaked through my shirt. I stood on the driveway, looking up at our bedroom window, where the light was still on. Behind me, the sound of the front door opening. Emily’s voice, small and broken: “Please don’t leave.”

I didn’t turn around. I just watched the rain fall on the asphalt, pooling in the cracks, wondering how many other lies had seeped into the spaces of our marriage. Somewhere inside, the movie we never finished was still playing. But our story—the one I thought we were writing together—had already ended.
